DEL MAR – Some of Southern California’s best-known surfboard shapers will display their work and explain how they do it at the Summer Beach Festival on Sunday in Del Mar.

The event will feature such shapers as Chris Christenson, who owns a shop in Bay Park in San Diego, and Rusty Preisendorfer, Stu Kenson and Tim Bessell.

The festival, put on by the Del Mar Village Association, Surfing Magazine and Rusty Del Mar surf shop at Powerhouse Park, is the first of its kind in Del Mar.

Thirty shapers, each showing 16 boards, will be housed under a tent. Inside the Powerhouse Community Center, surf artists and photographers such as Wolfgang Bloch, Flame and Rob Machado, a world-champion professional surfer from Cardiff, will show their work.

Noted surfboard shaper Chris Christenson is shown in his Bay Park factory with a 10-foot balsa board that will be on display Sunday at the Summer Beach Festival.

There also will be a surfing contest for children and adults, food, and music by the band Years Around the Sun.

At about 8:30 p.m., surf films will be shown in the park.

As many as 5,000 people are expected to attend the daylong festival, said Jen Grove, executive director of the Del Mar Village Association."
