Artificial Reefs

What happened to all the artificial reef production talk? How did “Fart” reef work out in Oz.? I remember Chouinard/Patagonia were all over this topic a while ago. WTFO???

Here’s a nice summary:

It appears they are money pits

Okay here is the deal with these reefs. They are very dangerous for surf spots world wide. If surfers accept them as substitutes for real spots then that gives developers world wide carte blanche to destroy any spot and replace it with what will in all likelihood be a shittier wave.

Thanks for the info Fellas. Sounds as if they still aren’t successfully engineered.

Rider, something I hadn’t considered especially in light of what is happening at Crab Is. in Ireland’s west coast.

I only have experience of the narrowneck reef - nothing too flash. Proponents say the primary function was beach stabilisation rather than surfing.

There may be successes but ‘the buyer beware’

Forked Tongues selling Snake Oil. I can’t believe they installed a material that would DEGRADE! and BREAK UP! to Pollute the surfline?!?!?!
