Artwork sealant before or after hot coat?

Hey everyone,

I have a question about sealing arting on a board. When is the best time to do art work with poca Pen on a board. My goal is to end with a gloss coat, possibly a polish coat. I am about to start laminating an 8’6 long board and want to add simple art to it. If I add the art after the hot coat, shoud I still spray it will the Krylon Krystal Clear or will that effect the gloss coat or have a texture. Or if i do the art after the hot coat and do not spray, will the art work smear as I put on the gloss coat. Any help on this topic is greatly apprciated

Thank you much

Some of the Posca pen colors tend to bleed when coated with gloss resin. A way around this problem is to seal the Posca art with a clear water based acrylic like Matte Medium, which is what I use. Scuff up the sealed MM surface with 400 grit or a scotchbrite pad before you gloss. Theres something in Krylon CC that gloss resin doesn’t like. I use to work in a shop where my spray room was next door to the gloss room. The glosser used to freak out if I shot some  Krylon CC and the door was open to his room. Just having the stuff ambiently in the air would mess up his glosses.

Hey Atom,

This is extremely good to know. I appreciate the input. I will try it. Any particular brand of MM you like more than another? Is Liquidex as good as any? I assume you just brush it over your art with a chip brush or a foamy brush.

Also, do you know if the art would smear or run if I didn’t seal it at all and just glossed over the Posca?

I spray the MM on. Probably use a foam brush if if you can’t spray. Obviously, you want the surface to be as uniform as possible before you gloss. I use Nova Color MM. Liquitex is fine. Nova’s cheaper, but you can’t buy it at an art store. You have to order it directly from them. A lot of people here use Future floor shine as sealer coat and and a paint additive. You can usually find that at a grocery store.

Black doesn’t move.  I’ve had blue, purple and yellow run in the gloss.
