just wondering if any of the crew here as apent anytime in arugam bay, sri lanka…I look to be heading there in june after a buisness trip to malaysia…anyway, would love to hear personal experences, if boards are avaiable there, what kind of board works what does not the usual…
One wonderful wave in a dream place, I was there twice before the tsunami and that were my best surftrips… don’t expect heavy waves neither a lot of points, almost all is Arugam… but sure you will enjoy it, just be kind and help the people as they help you…
I was there for four months just before the tsunami. It’s a beautiful place, you won’t regret going there, where else do you have to worry about elephants stomping your boards whilst you sleep, and crocodiles chomping you in the lineup?
Drawbacks though are the crowds and the drop-ins. There are a few points away from the village that are less crowded, but they mostly get less swell. There’s one that gets similar swell, but it’s a shorter wave and more fickle being a sand bottom rather than reef. You can camp there though, so you can get the wave to yourself first thing in the morning before any tuk tuks arrive.
The crowds on the main point thin out a lot when it gets bigger (probably up to DOH max), so you can get some good waves then. Paddle out before dawn is the best bet for getting some decent waves without the crowds otherwise. It’s a great wave if you’re lucky to get it good. Not too heavy, not too big, and really, really long, just a really fun rippable wave.
4 surf shops in town, Aloha at the north end, Hawkie’s place and “Surf and Sun” in the centre of the village, and Mambos closest to the point. Good idea to bring your own boards though, it’s a long way from anywhere so good boards are a bit of a prized commodity.
Personally I’d take a small wave board for the small perfect points away from the village for the average days, and maybe something a tiny bit bigger than ur normal short board for the bigger days on the main point.
If you’ve got the money then hire out a car so you can go and search for undiscovered breaks further down the coast, definitely some secret spots out there.
whatever the surf condition you will find there, it will be for sure an extraordinary experience.
I do attach a few shots of some everyday surf. (not that far from arugam bay) nothing to compare wit indo, for sure, but uncrowded line up at some places in this atmophere, and you will forget any dream of “perfection” with tons of fun, pleasure etc etc ! Be sure of sanytary condition before heading there, as after the tsunami “everyday basics” were missing for everyone there.
