Pics still not showing in the first post…
Who reckons this board would fit better on your backhand if you were a natural footer? I also think forehand bottom turns could be a bit more drawn out due to the longer rail on the other side. I got this photo of a Carl Ekstrom shape off Hydrodynamica by the way.
There’s a great piece on Ekstrom in the new TSJ.
You’ve got it right, if I understand it correctly.
“I got this photo of a Carl Ekstrom shape off Hydrodynamica by the way.”
You don’t shape boards…Everybody knows it…
Maybe you could post photos of what you are working on and we could help you with your design…No ,that would not work because you don’t build boards…
You just start threads…never build anything…never…never…never…ever…never
Post up some photos of your own work…Bro…
Maybe you could keep the personal attacks to yourself Ray? Or maybe you have something constructive you could add about asymmetry?
You don’t build boards…Prove me wrong…post em up Cowboy!
Where’s the photos???
Is not hijacking someone elses thread really that difficult Ray?
Jumpin in the middle and both sides aren’t the same… asymmetrically speaking of course, I have always wanted to ride an Ekstrom. As for shapin um, I do it every time I cut an outline. Would love to hear some rippuh stories about these things if they exist. Peace.
kind a weird… i was actually thinkin about asymetrical design in surfboards about a month ago…i remember back in the 80"s some snowboards were made with an asymetrical shape and they carved like nobodys bussiness…i was just wondering how that shape would transfer to surfboarsd design??cool design…MAHALO for the photos…
That’s pretty radical.
I suspect it would go better backhand, but would feel completely out of whack transitioning from frontside to backside or visa verssa. My idea of a functional assymetrical would be a little more curve in the tail… a touch shorter swallow on one side… a wing on one side… something more subtle than what I see here.
… unless you never plan on doing a turn.
yeah your right…my friend had one …he used hard shell boots, and could carve frontside…like insane…almost touching the ground…really laying it on edge…but backside was just like nothing special…thats what got me thinkiing about that design for surfboards…i would imagane that it would be similar??..ALOHA BRAH
Good point I reckon. I think going from backside to frontside (natural footer on this one) would result in a very quick engagement of the opposite rail on the tail. Too quick possibly and then the opposite rail might catch. But at the same time a pro might like it if it surfed that way if it is that sensitive to rail to rail transitions.
STOKED!
cut up a assym blank with da mook yesterday… looks funky… now… has anyone here made one before??
Got a fish on toe-side and a shorter more curvy line on the heelside. Questions arise:
Heelside, more rocker? like half-v?
fins, keel on toeside and half -quads on heel? or center fin with cant? (like ekstrom’s older assyms…)
railshapes, in line with each half or “forgiving” tucked rails on both sides?
Curious about that picture. Is it a goofy footer or a regular?
There’s new stuff on the way, Ekstrom/Bauguess collab. that could well be off the hook. Pictures are on the Hydro blog and there’s some footage of the earlier asym being ridden.

The bottom finless has my attention.
soooo nice.
Surfer Dave, I built one recently but have only ridden it once, in thigh high waves.
Can't tell you how it goes or if it goes.
While cutting the outline I realized the rails have to be different on thte two sides.
The shorter diamond side had a measurement of around 15.5"? 12 inches up with 14.25" on the longer swallow side.
I redrew the diamond side, pulling the tail in to about 14.5" and it looked much more functional.
When I say "I", I really mean Drewtang. I don't even look at foam without him in the bay. Thanks Drew.
I measured out the fins with some advice from others here on Sways and totally screwed up what they were advisiing.
Drew looked, laughed and re-marked one of the fins.
I went home and drilled the wrong dots, set the fins and didn't notice my mistake til after sanding and putting fins in the plugs.
Not sure if this board will ever see the water again. If you have good results, post them. Maybe I'll try again.

which side is backside?
On the Ekstroms, the deal is it’s for a regular foot surfer riding a right, and the longer side is your toe side so you get the benefit of the drive from the rail and the single keel, then when you lay into a cutback you’re turning a shorter board with a quad set up- makes sense in weird way, and from what I’ve seen of it being ridden it sure as hell works. Kenvin naturally was ripping on the thing on his backhand in a left, said it was really fun once you dialed it in, but he’s a freak.
arrrr, gettin da idea here…
Actually at one point yesterday it was funny, I was working on one half and mook on the other… how assymetrcial can you get…
should get some shots later on…
