It seems that Christmas is almost upon us and this year I would like to get my Dad a new longboard. He has bought me many boards over the years and I feel it is about time I returned the favor. He is 5’10", 185, getting close to 50, and is a weekend warrior. He mainly surfs Bolsa Chica (Beach Break), but sometimes makes it down to San’O. He only rides one board at a time so it would be good if the board is versatile. I have narrowed it down to a couple of shapers but would like some input on design.
What dimensions, board weight, rocker, and rails would you all prefer? Should I go with a 2+1 or a single (glass or box)? Square, diamond, pin, or other? Or any thoughts in general on the board design.
I really want to get him something special and would like any feedback. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and now I am off to grab some waves.
I don’t think you could do any better than to contact Mr. Jim Phillips (760) 753-6299. Jim combines the highest level of craftsmanship, and surfboard design knowledge. For my two cents worth, I think a single fin might be the way to go.
Get you dad involved in the design process with Jim. Good luck with you project.
Don’t buy your dad a board… take him to the shaper and let him order a custom. You need to know more than his height and weight to get the right board. What has he been riding… what did he like or not like about his other boards… what are his goals with this new board - shred, cruise, catch waves easy, noseride, etc.
Do like Bill says and take him to Jim the Genius. You can’t go wrong doing that.
By the way, I’m 48, 5’8", and 185lbs. I ride everything from sub six-foot fishes to thrusters, to singles and hybrids, to longboards and guns. Since I’m a product of the shortboard revolution, I like my longboards to be performance oriented. I like them loose and fast so I can whip them around like a shortboard. I was there for the supertankers in the 60’s so I don’t feel the need to go retro. Because I’m pushing 50, I like boards that paddle well enough that I’m not too humiliated when 12 year old girls on thrusters paddle by me.
