iam in w.a and was wondering if you could contact me i guess iam the only one left in w.a who knows about blasa boards and for that reason i am getting a few of your old boards . i would like to ask you a few questions . i have been repairing them with epoxy . but have a feeling that some of them may have vinylester or polyester as the finishing/top coat .

The Balsawood boards that I built and still do are glassed in Polyester resin. That come out really clear. Balsa does not have any oil in it so you do not need to use epoxy. When using exotics you have to use epoxy because the wood is so oily. I would think that these boards were glassed in Polyester. However Bert would know best as to what he used.
i have been making balsa ,carbon, full epoxy samwich boards for 3 years and windsurfers for 7 so i hope by now i know a thing or two about composite construction . the reason behind my bert question is to see if there is a faster way to repair his boards . i would be happy to stop repairing them all together but its hard to say no to everyone who brings balsa boards to me cause there great boards and there is no one else i can send them too .
on the point of polyester on eps ( polystrene) yes it can definitely be done i have made a few short boards what you need to is apply at least 6 coates of bondcrete its like water down pva glue , it forums a barrier between the foam and resin .
you end up with a very lite board but because it has no stringer and its polyester unless you use alot of glass they do not have compression strength and will fail in a short time
anything numbered before 1712 was ciba geigy epoxy lams , epoxy filler/hot coats and automotive acrylic clear (the sludgy stuff when you sand it )
1712 to around 2900 was FR 251 from F&R sales in welshpool as lam and various coats , then finished with a home blend polyester finish coat as a gloss , 2900 through to 3150 were epoxy lams and a 2 pac finish …
they are the basic resins you would find on the outside when doing a repair …
once the repair is finished and sealed , even an automotive single pack acrylic will give a nice shine when buffed , it just scratches a little easier …
