Hey Guys,
I received an e-mail about a Greg Noll restoration tonight and wanted to post some photos. I know little to nothing on this board, but I do have a few photos.
Thanks,
Greg’s book has a two page spread that covers the logos and years they were used. That logo was 1960-66. The fin would date it closer to '66.
If you look closely that fin has been ground down to a completely different shape from its original shape.
There are a few things about the board that would date it no earlier than '65 in my opinion.
The outline
The logo placement
The cut lap line.
Even though the fin was altered as seems likely by the photo as pointed out by mako, I don’t see a chopstick in the fin.
Add it all together and I say '65 or '66
I was wondering about that little tab on the forward section of the fin. Nice observation Mako!
Bill, how did the cut lap line change in later years?
I saw my first Greg Noll’s in 1963 when we got a shipment at Charlie Keller’s Surf Shop in Lavallette, New Jersey that Summer. They didn’t have cut lines the glass being free lapped. I’m pretty sure the one I got in '64 was free lapped. A lot of boards were free lapped in those days. I remember someone bringing in a Dewey Weber that had a cut lap in '64 or so. There was some discussion about that.
By '65 I’m pretty sure just about all boards had cut laps.
Then in the late sixties at some point a lot of makers started using flat weave cloth which was invisible and could be free lapped. I remember at G & S when we were building Magics, etc, ('68-'69) they were glassed with volan on the top and flat weave on the bottom so that the tops had a free lap and the bottoms had a cut lap.
At some point and up 'til today most boards are free lapped. Of course some will special order their long boards with volan with a cut lap but not that often.
I may have the dates a little mixed up and I’m not an expert on glassing but I’m sure someone with a little more kinowledge can let us know if I’m wrong about this. But generally that’s another way to date a board when taking other factors into account too.
