I will be heading to australia this month and for a bit of next month also, Carins,Sydney,Brisbane. I’m looking to try and hit the beach a few times in each city if possible. Anyone down there have any suggestions or is willing to hook up for a trip? Thanks,
nothin at all wrong with Perth, I would love to go there again but unfortunately it’s not on my schedule I wish it was though, Perth is a cool city and i hooked up with a beautiful Irish girl there a long time ago…ahh the memories…
Depends how you ar travelling , by air you will only get waves in Sydney.
By road depending on the weather,You can get waves from Cairns (Ratshit bay)Mackay ,Yeppoon, Agnes Water, Rainbow Beach ,DI, Noosa. Depends on the weather .
wheres D.I one day in sunny caloundra( an hour south of noosa) a long time ago i convinced a mate that a trip to agnes was the go ( IT was pumping where we were by the way… cyclone swell)… any way after a four hour drive we got there and everyone was gettin out saying wow the swell just suddenly dropped off should have been here blah bla blah. decided to drive back down home and it was onshore … the only respite after this desperate mission was the two swedish chick hitchhikers that really needed a place to stay the night he he…
hey im no longer a newbie how did that happen the word user has so may conatations though… anyway not much surfing north of noosa really … theres waves on frazer island but theres heaps of sharks you can see them from the beach …northern new south wales has heaps of uncrowded waves still… or it did 7 years ago… the goldcoast is wicked but hell crowded … victoria rocks i used to think it was to cold but im used to it now if your in melbourne try phillip island… sydneys got heaps of good waves and you can catch a train…
I'd not bother about Agnes, or anywhere north of Noosa at this time of year. I lived in Gladstone from Feb. last year 'til Feb. this year, checked Agnes almost every weekend. I've been in the Northern Territory since Feb. this year and have had more, and better quality surf in those three months than the entire year previous.
I had 4ft Agnes pnt last week. Maybe you should have asked a local or a regular about conditions. If you get surf at Airlie I will swing by my nuts from Sydney Harbour… And I promise that…
Meant no disrespect, there are some great surfers at Agnes, like I said, I could only get there on weekends. Used to work with Chris Charalambous. His old man Harry has had a house there since the 70's, so I thought he'd have it sussed. It never really did its thing, despite the stories of cranking point waves. I really only surfed it up to shoulder high once, and that was with as much checking as I could do. Probably 40 trips down in one year at Gladstone. Not a very good average. And I wasnt talking about the waves at Airlie.
Nah, this is just a photo I pulled off the web of a place that I spent a month and a half in 2001. It didn't get below about the size in the photo for the whole trip, with just myself and my mate Jase out. Next swell I'll post some pics of my new local, unless I've put the mocker on it by bagging Agnes...
Hey all, thanks for all the good info, now all I have to do is find these places. One more question its winter there or fall right? Wetsuit or will i still be able to trunk it?
Anyone know a good cheap car rental in Sydney/Brisbane/Carins? I dont think the train people would appreciate a nice longboard on the train.
I’m seriously thinking about moving to west coast oz in a couple of years… Mainly so I can surf with hicksy, chippy and even roy… But also so I can be in a seriously undeveloped part of the world with great wide open spaces and very cool people.
sounds like you will be getting here just as the water cools in NSW. I don’t know how cold it gets where you live but you will find most people in 3/2 steamers in NSW when you are here. Some guys have been in them for the past month and we’ve had 21-22 degrees C water temp (sorry don’t know what that is in F, just it’s beeeuuutiful).
You may only need boardies in the sunshine coast, though that’s my guess not my experience.
Have a good one, you should latch onto some good waves while you are here.

nice shwuz , but roy [in new zealand ] is just slightly more than a few miles away from west australia …you might like to buy yourself a map between now and when you come perhaps …
