Aloha , I have sorta messed p the colors on my first board resulting in it being sorta ugly . Rides good thou. Can I paint ti with Awlgrip or some other type paint right on the sand coat . (after sand coat is sanded) Thanks
It’s AWLGRIP .Yeah sand with 220 grit or 280 grit and spray those lovely isosyanates to your hearts delight!! They have great epoxy primers also. The thing is your board will look like a surftech !Awlgrip and Sterling coatings are the choice of Yacht refinishing experts!
in order to increase the social acceptability of my chosen method of production i need awlgrup or something similar. (sorry about mispelling, couldn’t resist it).
what methods can be used to apply it?
Just ride it, it’s only a surfboard and you can make your next one better…but if it bugs you>>>>>>>>
I’ve used epoxy, 2 part, industrial paint for refinishing sailboats and even a couple of old tankers that were well past their prime. You can spray it, roll it or brush it). Today I would just do an opaque polyester or better yet, opaque epoxy gloss coat. Heavy on the white pigment in your color mix for opacity.

I looked at your pic and I would say sand with 120 grit then spray awlgrip 545 epoxy primer let cure 24 hrs then sand with 220 or 280 grit then spray 2-3 coats awlgrip( they have great colors) You need to spray a topcoat such as awlgrip or other brand linear polyurethane enamel for UV protection.Awlgrip has been the top LP for Yacht and aircraft production for over 30 yrs–the stuff is way tougher than gelcoat and is non-porous,chemical resistent,no waxing needed!! Get application guide from Awlgrip. Also the clear is really cool over wood or dark colors.
How many people are spraying this stuff without using a supplied air respirator?
From what I understand it WILL eventually cause major health problems.
I know with Sterling you can get very very close to a spray finish using a foam roller and tipping out with a brush, and it is supposed to be much safer than spraying
Hey LIquid…have you ever heard of Dupont “Chroma Clear”?The stuff is unreal but a little pricey at around $130 for a gallon kit.Anyone out there ever use it?
I sprayed large yachts for a living for over 20 yrs with awlgrip and sterling mostly and they are an awesome material! I have chromaclear on an old diesel benz I have and it is holding up great and it’s also a more forgiving application than LP’s. That chromaclear holds up just about as good and can be rubbed out fairly easily. For aircraft or marine application you need a chemical resistence ,so a polyester urethane is needed , instead of acrylic urethanes. You can pour MEK on a polyester urethane like awlgrip and it will not touch it!
LP has cyanide in it’s base. Wear a mask or die.
