I bought a can of black pigment from a reputable surf material supplier in Florida and it appears to be bad. First off it is real liquid and has a funky smell. I am used to pigment having some thickness to it. This stuff just runs off a popsicle stick. Also my resin pins are taking forever to kick. Using reichold Gloss resin. Any one ever had this problem???
Black pigment has a lower viscosity than pigents such a green or red, also their is a weight difference between colors, i know if you add to much tint or pigment it can effect the curing process, but the funky smell sounds weird to me, give the supplier a call im sure they hook you up. maybe the can had been opened and air got to it or it was old. Who knows.
Howzit Mr. Clean, Yep it's gone bad which is unusual since I had some pigment that was over 20 years old and it was still good and just needed to be stirred up, I have never seen pigment be runny and if it is taking to long to kick then take it back and tell them to check their other pigments, especially the blacks. Those old pigments we had in the 60's and 70's were the best for sure. Aloha,Kokua
I have some new black that is the same way, very runny. I just set it off hot.
BUt if it smells and doesn’t kick it no bueno…
Describe the smell. Alot of pigments floating around and being sold these days are water base and can definitly go bad. The smell is usually the tell-tale sign. Sometimes though they can still be used. Tell me what you think it smells like and I'll tell you if it's past its prime.
Howzit McDing…I guess it smells something like watered down Gin.
I thought Gin didn't smell? I've got no idea what bath tub gin, gin and tonic etc smell like. Only an alky would know I guess. If it smells moldy, musty or mildewy; it is old. It might still work, but no guarantees.
