Baja Blues Again

Oh Mama…

Caption on the Photo should be  " Are you sure this is the way to the secret spot?"

I sure do miss the fun that can be had in five star accommodations like these.   Even after the night critters ate every tortilla, we still had fun. Oh the things we learned the first time.   Adios.   Darren

Darren…your camp reminds me of mine!

Your camp is a bit cleaner than ours was.    It sure was a hassle fitting all of that stuff back in the Tacoma every time we wanted to keep moving south.    I would like to say that next time we will pack less, but I cant imagine that.   At the end of the day it was worth it for thirty days in a row. Adios.  Darren

Hello…just put new tires on the old truck; been itchen to drive south, to Todos Santos, asap. How is the ‘social climate’ now, down Baja way ? Lots of not very positive reports here on Sways…how was your experience ??

Todos awaits you…lots of good food, surf and people…Most problems are on the border and Mainland…

Cross border in the morning and once past San Quintin…wide open spaces…next couple days there will be lots of Baja 1000 traffic…race started yesterday…

Dont drive at night…as always

God, that is beautiful.  Thanks for posting it, Roger.  Nice, tidy little town, too.  I miss it down there. Mike

Baja was always an adventure. I Have had some great times down there. Then we also had some near miss disasters. I have been robbed, harassed by Cops in Tiajuna  Once while driving rutted washboard roads for hour the drain pug on the oil pan came loose and we lost all our oil in a very remote area. Luck was on our side a Mexican fisherman happened by and he sold use some oil at about 1o times what it would have cost in a store but what the hell. We were grateful. Dispite all that we kept going down becuse the good times always made up for the bad.

All of you seem to have more recent and past experience in Baja Sur than I do.  So my question is;  Is it safe for an "old Guy" to spend most of the winter in or near Todos Santos(at least a month).  Dog, pickup with a Lance camper.  Nothing new or flashy.  If so where are some the best places to set up?  It doesn't have to be remote. I like local people.  My Spanish isn't too bad.  Prefer the security of an RV park and people, just not too many people.  Clue me.

My last trip was in 2008 with the WildCoast crew while they were working.  Seven Sisters area about 2 weeks after a rain.  Flowers everywhere. Ding, I’m not going back for a while.

One of many points:

from one old guy to another…old is good as I think the culture(as in Hawaii), seems to respect older people…

alone is good also…seems like most of the young guys bring far too many(any more than one is too many)

Is it safe? I’d say it is very safe…especially if you are camping in a zone where there are others.

There are alot of Gringos living in the Todos area and alot of international travelers and no shortage of surfers…but it is a great place to winter…water stays pretty warm and it picks up wests and northwests…air temps in winter…guessing 70’s into the 80’s during the day…the Mexicans seem to like the Gringos…as they have brought jobs to area…

there used to be a campground at San Pedrito…but was washed away during a Chubasco…but people still camp on beach in that area and they say the right on the point is fun…I think there is a campground at Los Cerritos. Mostly I just pass through Todos Zone…so I dont know much about accomidations etc…but you wont have any problem sorting that stuff out…

There is a Baja camping book by Mike and Terri Church that I would recommend you purchase…it is pretty up to date…

If you see the old guy in the above pic…say hola!! That restaurant is right in town and very good…sorry dont remember the name of it…

If you like going left…PM me

Howzit proneman,  I have been down that street in Todos Santos many times but not since 94'. I don't thikthere was camping at Cerritosthen but I have heard there has been a lot of development since then. I know I have camped at one spot near there but once again in 94'. On my last trip I had a 1ton 4x4 Chevy with a cab over camper and spent 4 months down there, abour 6 weeks in Cabo and qnd 10 weeks at Scorpion Bay. I lucked out sine nobody was coming to scorp that year and scored so many great uncrowded waves and since I had been there several times I also got to spend a lot of time with my Mexican friends there. Now it's a zoo and have no intention of going back.In the days before the Cantina was built re really the days of Scorp. I helped jaimie get the cantina so it was making money but he had no idea of how to run a cantina. Back in 94 I found his plce in Cabo called " Club Cabo" and was the only one staying there and the owner was a gringo with a mexican wife and wantedme to run the place for him but at point I still bound to Kauai. Aloha,Kokua

I’m going on a cruise with a couple of buddies in march that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.  Is it easy enough to get a taxi or bus to surf spots from the main port areas or should I leave my board at home?
