Balsa bleed

Hey Fellow Sways,

In my youth I had a Bing and a Weber both with 2” Balsa stringers.

The Bing expired in three pieces.

And my performer was a tinted lam and traded for a short board.

So I never got to watch them age.

Why does the balsa seem to bleed Just wondering WTF?? Glue? Tannen? Can it be prevented?  i.e. GG or alternate glues?

I do have a Spoon with a Balsa wedge (black glue) that is in good shape, what gives?

As I come from the old times and do repairs to supplement my SS I handle a few.

My question is twofold…

#1 I have noted the “T”band (with the redwood on the outside) doesn’t seem to bleed out into the foam as bad as pure Balsa…

? Is it the glue/resin??? (See photos).

#2 How many have noticed the “swelling” or simple bulging of the stringer with the modern glassing schedules.

I do vintage repairs and own a few.

And, I mean, 2 layers of 10oz cloth, as in “vintage” no problem, I have not seen the same in the newer classics.

I am concerned that these newer classics (whom guys paid ( $$$ 4) are not aging well…

What say you Guru’s?

Mahalo

I built some mahogany/balsa/mahogany t-bands and saw the same from the managing on a recent repair. No idea why this happens but I have sealed subsequent stringers with resin. Jury is still out but I doubt it will work since the whole stringer is coated with resin when assembled.

All the best

I’d say the difference in the modern traditional boards is the foam , not the wood…most balsa from Equador is still air dried , same as it always has been…but the foam formulas have changed quite a bit over the years.

you are all wrong, boards were built before almost all of you were born, have you noticed new generation blanks don’t do this?

in the 60’s blanks were glued with urea glues, a Montsano product consisting of a powder and liquid, went off very quickly, the chemicals are the culprit, not the wood

Yep.      That was some crazy stuff.      Had a vinegar kind of smell to it.

Jim nailed it.

Stringer bulging, or swelling is acually the foam shrinking.

MDI swells.

TDI  shrinks.

Clark swelled and so does US Blanks.

Arctic shrinks as does many Aussie foams.

This board was made in 2003

This is not the first time I have felt stringer bulges in modern classics.

Perhaps all were Clark, eh for me; I just fix ‘em.

Just the shame…

Like a bitchen hand shaped job by Phil Becker

that will probably not get better.

Really not something I’ll lose sleep over.

Just one question…

If you got a bug up your butt to make a classic

Any feedback on US Blanks “classic” foam?

@ Barry, the sauce is the boss…

Mattwho - this board was shaped with the classic foam.  I know my fans love it when I post my pics (again, and again, ha!), so…

I found it easy to work with and a pleasure to shape.  I thought it was heavy when I was shaping it, but I used less glass than I normally do (I’m normally a heavy glasser), and I don’t even notice the weight now.  And the board has seen some steady use and held up remarkably well for the past two years, maybe two small dings in all that time.

I haven’t been surfing it lately because of, well, having so many boards.  But the recent glider thread has got me thinking about adding widowmaker sidebites for the larger days.  If only I could find somebody to tell me just how to lay out the widowmakers… (I asked Wade at FGH and he was kinda vague about it)
