Thinking about trying to do a stand-up balsa over the winter. Does anyone know where I could get some templates or info on paddle boards. I don't have much shaping experience but I don't want to mess this board up.
Yes you may do it...
ALL the info you need is in the archieves of this site, Swaylocks.
ie. size, shape, thickness (all info specific for your height, weight, skill) and what materials to use (either all balsa, chambered, composite) and how to do it, shaping, glassing, curing.
Do a little research then come back to us and let us know your size, ability, what you want to use the board for... AND I'm sure you will get a LOT of info about how to go about it.
Make sure you post a picture thread on how you did it AND a surf report afterwards![img_assist|nid=1055814|title=Balsa SUP|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=0|height=0]

WoW, small Pic, sorry.
Standupzone.com is all about SUPs. There is a section there called "Shaper's Shack" that has info on doing it yourself. Quite a few of the guys there refer to Swaylocks as well. Dwight, Sam, Heave and several others are generally willing to give tips via private messages or discussion boards.
wood ogre made a bitchen one a while back
check him out , theres a build thread somewhere in here
do you live somewhere that affords balsa at especially low prices?
Wood_Ogres balsa hallow wood hallow rail, fish with an attitude !!!
Howzit Wood_Ogre, Isn't fish with an attitude lunchmeats logo name for his fish shapes. I remember printing the logos for him and they had a picture of a Ulua for the logo. Aloha,Kokua
Kokua, Yes it is Lunchmeats logo. I didn't even know it at the time I made the board. Was talking with lunchmeat at Ace hardware in kapaa. He was checking out my board then showed me a board in the back of his truck. (he always has a bunch) . Flipped it over and it had fish with an attitude logo on it. We had a good laugh over that ! Never really paid much attention to what Lunchmeat makes as his craftsmanship is not so good although he dose have some interesting ideas sometimes. Fish with an attitude was just the title for the building thread. I have had my logo since sometime in the 1970s.
Kokua , Do you remember back in the 70s when Lunchmeat was working repairing boats for Smiths Boats and got his hair caught in a drill motor and it pulled a very big chunk of his hair out by the roots ? We were woundering if it would grow back ! Boy did everyone get on him about that !
Howzit Wood_Ogre, Yes I remember hearing about that one and he is a classic for sure. When I was building my Restaurant ( Tropical Taco ) in the Big Save shopping center he would stop by every morning and give me a Honolulu Advertiser and then work my ear for 15 minutes. Did you ever go to any of the infamous Boogie Kalama Birthday parties in te 70's. Well during one of them he and Shak were slowly driving down Kuhio where the parking meters were and Lunch meat was knocking the heads off of them and tossing them into Shak's convertable. We had some real classic people living on Kauai in those days. What did you think of the Lams I made for him, plus I installed his FCS plugs for him. Aloha,Kokua
Funny i remember the guy fron the time I spent on Kauai after Iniki. Used to see him down by the boat lauch in Kapaa all the time. I think he lived there somewhere behind the Adventist church. Then after I came back to Calif I saw a pic. of him and his old car in one of the longboard mags. I think he won a mag. contest for coolest nickname. I think I've still got the magazine somewhere in storage. Classic.
Kokua your lams were great! Mcding , yes Lunchmeat lived right by the boatramp in Kapaa,Couldn't miss the place it was the lot with the old shack and several dead boats and a hell of a lot of junk all over. Lived there a long time and he was all over on his bike ! He was evicted about 3 years ago so they could bulldoze the house and build a new one so don't see him around on the bike anymore but often see him around kapaa in his truck. There are a million and one Lunchmeat stories, He's a classic for sure ! Kokua , There is a taco place where your restaurant was , Verde, really good food. Was it open yet before you left ? Good solid surfer grinds !! Kokua, you remember the old house right by where the kite surfers are in kapaa that they used to rent to all the deadbeats. It was always for sale for one million to a million and a half. A couple weeks ago someone started to do a complete renovation on it. I always thought they would tear it down! Since the beach bike path was finished the little park there looks nice but the walkers seem to think the road by baby beach belongs to them and they don't move out of the way for the cars and they park their cars at the park to bike and walk on the path getting kind of crouded for kite surfing . When I park there I have to keep my balsa boards in board bags or everyone wants to know about them. Thats the down side of wood boards is that every one wants a show and tell , which I don't mind except it upsets my wife when I get home cause I was so lait talking story. She used to think I had a girlfriend down there and she would sneak down in her car and try to catch me. Sorry crujones ,didn't mean to hijack your thread !!
Crujones, I ment to mention that if you want a to build a nice SUP board that you know will work well for paddleing you might look into the ChesepeakeLight Craft 14 foot Kaholo. It's stitch and glue. You can buy it as a kit or just the patterns depending on your skill . Saves you the head ach of trying to figure everything out for yourself. The patterns are full size and it comes with a picture instruction book that is first rait ! If you buy the kit you spend about what you would for a really cheap SUP board and end up with a board that is as good as a $ 2,000 custom !!! Ahui Hou
Howzit McDing , Yep that would be Lunchmeat and like Wood_Ogre said he lived right therenext to the ramp The movie companies liked to use him for small parts because his upper body was almost likesomething out of a body building magazine and I know he was in The Thorn Birds and one of the undead movies.
Wood_Ogre, He moved to anahola and I have only seen him a few times at Ambroses after that. He could talk your ear off if you let him but he is a good guy. Aloha,Kokua
