? bamboo and volan ?

…has anyone here used it together , much ?

  barry snyder , maybe ?

I have a bamboo skateboard blank  [ as seen on the  ’ thanks heaps RDM ’ thread   …   ]    and , believe it or not , the offcuts of glass I picked up are volan [!] .

So,  I want to put it to good use [ I have already made a 4 x 6 "mini  [fin] panel , with smaller sized volan offcuts]

I’m just wanting to protect / waterproof the bamboo , plus lose a ‘little’ of the flex in the deck [but not toooo muchhh !]

one layer of volan per side , I’ve got available , at the moment …

thanks for any help re:  'sealing ', glassing , extra resin quantities needed ?  , sanding , etc …

  cheers !

ummmm…

  ANYONE ??

We actually have a few customers that use volan with the bamboo decks. It’s a pretty great flex and ride. They bend the bamboo and then laminate. Not sure how they bend it. Some of the guys also leave it flat too. All kinds of options that yield fun and different rides…just like surfboards. Not sure how smooth and the quality of the bamboo is you have but if you want to seal it then use a layer of polyester surfboard resin, applied with a squeegee. Then glass on the layer of volan. If it’s a good smooth piece that is finished out nicely then you probably don’t have to seal it. Lay up your volan and make sure to trim the edges before the resin fully cures. Flip the board over and do the other side. Maybe throw on a quick sanding coat to seal it all. Sand it and then you’re ready to roll. Don’t go too thick on the sanding coat or else it will crack when the board flexes. Good luck and post some pics. Here’s a video of a balsa lamination that the glasser seals before glassing. Balsa is way more porous and absorbs more resin than bamboo does. Just the same idea as far as the layup goes.

… yeeehaaaaa  !!!

thanks very much , for your reply !

I thought  that , out of 18, 000 users here … SURELY  at least ONE person  ''may " have done it ?!

So far , I have been riding it [ungripped and unglassed ] .

Once the wheels and trucks were screwed into the deck [and wheel wells done] , I was pretty KEEN to ride it , to say the least .

It is  30 " x 10 " [about 1/2" thick ] . It has slight concave in the deck .

'RDM ’ Rohan did a GREAT job making the blank !

I have just been cruising up and down my local street , nothing too dangerous !  [ as it may  still be a bit  "  fragile ‘’ , unglassed ,  I guess ? ]

 okay ,  cheers again , for your help , mate  !

  ben

Hey Ben.

It won’t be too fragile to skate as is. It will only need glass if you want to stiffen it up (if it’s got too much flex for your tase) or if you wanted a bit of extra abrasion resistance. But if you dont need/want either then just use it as is.

cheers Ro !

yep , I’m thinking of just ? varnishing ?  clear spraying it ? now, as I LIKE the flex in it !

what would you recommend , what do you finish YOUR decks  with , if you don’t glass them ?

  cheers

Just spray it with some varnish Ben. Otherwise a little bit of resin would be fine.

cheers , will do .

I found some self-adhesive 10 "wide deck grip too , at the local skateshop . Going to go back there and get the staff to 'professionally’put it on for me .

Then I 'may’give the local skatepark a roll , surprise the groms ?!   …  but  not the bowl there though , have you seen that thing ?

7’deep [!] , at BOTH ends , heaps of vertical …  would be the equivalent of me trying surfing e.p. on the bushfire fish , me skating that bowl !
