bamboo veneer fin panel question

I got hold of some 1mm bamboo veneer and thought I would start by making a fin panel out of it.
Five layers with 6oz between is pretty close to 6.5mm so I’m happy there, but I’m unsure about the orientation of the grain should I alternate the sheets or have them all the same?

It’ll be plenty strong either way, but I think it’ll be easier to foil if bamboo is all oriented the same. The grain should be oriented on the fin angled from the front base to the tip.

I did a panel like this and it was difficult to get a smooth foil… then I did a panel with 6 layers of just bamboo and it was much easier to foil… the sander would remove the bamboo faster than the glass and make ridges/grooves.

hi Tom !

will they be for glassons ?

I ask , because the ones I did for fcs , I just used one layer of veneer , put about 15 layers into the panel …

  cheers

I’ve made bamboo fins with aligned grain, and they’ve been fine, however, bamboo is very prone to splitting along the grain. It will be a lot stronger if you alternate the grain direction. This will also allow you angle the visible grain lines however you like, whereas single direction grain should run more or less from the leading edge to the tip. On the flip side, aligned grain looks a lot sexier, and they are glassed afterward…

Haha yes aligned grain does look better.
I’ve got some light 3oz cloth I’ll put that between instead then a few layers of 6 on the back. Don’t want ridges happening.

chip hopfully glass on bonzer sides plus centre box fin
then should be able to get a tabbed quadset and a some little one tabbers

I eagerly look forward to seeing them , Tom !
