Bamboo veneer

Im making a 10’ sup out of EPS and am going to vac a bamboo veneer on the deck, Would it be best to seal the EPS ???

Actually you don´t need to seal the eps that goes under the veneer… makes a stronger bond! You can just spread epoxy over the bamboo veneer place on the shape and pull vac. To make a stronger construction you can cut fiberglass the same measure of the veneer, wet it out with epoxy (weigh the coth and use the same proportion of epoxy), spread the coth over the veneer, then apply to the shape with the coth side over the eps and pull vac.

Thanks

The first board I did veneers on I laid the bottom veneer directly against my core.  My core got wet via a rail ding and the veneer ended up getting wet from the inside.  That’s one mistake I never repeated.    That board still gets surfed on a regular basis but it looks horrible and I die a little every time I see it.

These days I never lay veneers directly against the foam.  I always use a layer of cloth to get the adhesion and to protect the veneer from water should the core get wet.  Even better to seal the blank (with epoxy slurry, not waterbased spackle) so that the vacuum dosen’t pull the resin away from veneer.  It also protects the veener a little more.

As for wetting out the veneer, I use the Greg Loerh trick of spritzing a little spray adhesive (like 3M Super 77) to the core side of the veneer, laying cloth against that so it lays flat, and using a foam roller to just barely wet out the cloth.  Barely wet out the cloth.  If you use any more than is necessary the vacuum pulls out the excess and it gets all over.   I made that mistake only once as well.

I lay up 3mm cedar veneer over EPS using single pack  poo glue. Squeggy on both surfaces then roll out dry cloth [precut] using piece of dowel … A cursury wet out and straighten out and then lay on top veneer … slot her into the bag. It’s pretty easy … same applies if you are using Epoxy. I’m over Epoxy in this application. Epoxy will crack under foot where poo glue keeps on hanging on.

Cheers.

Cedar @ 3mm with 4oz cloth under there is no need for glass outside a far as strength goes. Glass outside only useful for fairing out varrying density layers of timber. I prefer doing the hard yards with sanding block instead. In fact I don’t use glass anymore but rather a very available form of hemp cloth … it’s called hessian.

Nice trick and nice vacuum system Quanta! So you´re doing the out glass the same time as you bag the veneer?

Cheers

Awesome!

I made a few balsa compsands, but yours are works of art, congrats!

EPS sealing would be a useless expense here as per Your described design. Quantos I love Your design without glass that too. You have great deal of creativity.
