Hey guys, I was thinking about making a fish with a Bat Wing tail and was wondering if this is worth making. I’m going to make a single concave and than either to a double or a vee through the tail. With that extra piece in the middle it looks like it would flow really nice with a double or vee. Has anyone tried this before with this kind of tail and is worth shaping or should I just stay with the regular swallow tail instead. I drew a picture of it for you guys incase you didn’t know what I ment. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
This was somewhat covered a week or so ago.
look in the archives…
at the Lowers Contest , Kelly Slater had a diamond tail
that was mislabeled as a bat tail…it got some press
as a bat tail…which is probably the metaphysical reason
your asking about a bat tail.
I think the concensus of my readings were that there
wasnt any significant difference between it and the
‘out of fashion’ and ‘design-wise not very useful’ diamond tail.
However your concave concept idea with it may be different.
You may check out Terry Fitzgeralds screwdriver tails, he employed
spiral vee with( a single to double concave).
–I thiink its already been done.
that design is way popular around Halloween time, looks spooky and kind of scary rad
After the Lower’s contest, local shops had a barrage of requests for “bat tails”. After a few were quickly made, alot of people were saying how great they were. I talked to one guy who was raving about it, and drew I him a picture to compare it with a swallow tail. He corrected my bat drawing to a diamond pattern, and I later figured out what was going on. Everyone’s still calling them bat tails, which is just another example of how valuable the pro’s are as marketing tools.

… and , how clueless and easily led a large percentage of the kids are…
Martin Potter was riding those bat tails back in the 80’s and 90’s in Australia. I believe he still has one or two in his quiver…

Here’s the batwing tail on my Gemini.
Jeff Alexandar suggests it for this board design.
Really couldn’t tell you what it does for his boards. I usually defer to the shaper in these kinds of situations.
