Bearing on Probox router bit stopped spinning - advice?

My wife picked me up a new Probox installation kit on a trip to California, and it worked great for my first install. Last night, however, I started routing and it just didn’t feel right. Instead of traveling smoothly, it felt like there was extra friction between the bearing and the edge of the plastic jig.

Then I realized that the bearing was actually melting the jig! It was completely stuck in place, and therefore it was spinning as fast as the router bit.

I waited till it cooled down, and then tried fidgeting with the bearing - but that sucker is NOT moving.

Has this happened to anyone before? Any advice for getting that bearing spinning again? I’m mystified as to how this happened as it worked perfectly last week.

THANKS!

buy a new bit. this is a shot bearing. yo can try wd40 to unlock it and grease it after. do not run it with wd40 alone it will lock again.

Cool - thanks Louis. I’ll try that and report back. So crazy that the bearing crapped out after one board!

I found that if you don’t put slight pressure against the jig while routing the hole out the bearing doesn’t spin melting the jig. I cleaned the bearing reinstalled it on the bit it worked fine. I melted a few jigs before I figured this out try it out on some scrap material.

If you route through tape the adhesive will clog the bearing.I soak my locked bearings in firearm oil then clean them off real good with compressed air and paper towels.Or you can find a new bearing online and trash the old one.

I gotta say, Probox Larry is one heck of a guy!

Yes - Larry IS a great guy!

Big thanks to Louis, Hanya and Jesus for the advice. The router bit is with a friend of a friend right now - in the emergency room of the bearing hospital. Luckily medical care is subsidized in Israel.

Will see what happens, and will soak it in firearm oil and give ‘er the ole’ air compressor if the operation is not successful.

Larry - I’ll be in touch with you either way, as I need to load up on Proboxes during my next trip to Cali in 2 weeks!

When I do any formica laminations the contact cement always builds up on the bearing. When this occurs, I just soak them in some Parts Cleaner (auto) and de-gum them. Then blow out with compressor and lube. Use it first on some scrap to fling the excess lube out.
