Beating the Dead Horses

Paul C asked why threads seem to run shorter lately. First thought that popped in my head was “beating a dead horse”.

So here’s a new question/poll:

What is the most often asked, if not, abused (dead horse beating) inquiry in Swaylocks?

My vote goes to “How do I measure Rocker?”

(But man’o man, there are soooo many others!)

I’m going with Fin position suggestions please!!! I’m sure I’ve asked for help with this on more than four occasions (built 5 boards so far).

By the way, how do you measure rocker?

Peace!

No,no,no…

IT’S

How to install a box !

2nd would be …How do you shape a fish.

IMHO the most abused dead horse question is “what about the whole China board building problem?”

I think that the reason that the site is like this is because the site is organized inefficiently.

The discussion categories should be organized around surfboard design topics (Shaping, Glassing, Fins, Waves, Surfing, Industry Topics, etc.).

If the site was organized in this manner, there could be stickies for common questions in each category, and it would be easier to search for answers.

A wiki would keep alot of questions easily answered. and would be such a amazing resource.

sticktheory.com was up for awhile but seems to be no longer.

…you re right

but if these stuff is all organized and perfect in place

with the top glass shape threads…well, there will be no more reason to come here to talk with internet fellas or learn something

cause in a few months there s no more topics

except for some exotics stuff, history, etc

so, like with every bbque you just finish talking about the same, but you have couple of hours ok with friends, etc

For clarification, I never suggested beating dead horses is no good. Newbies are allowed, and I help often. But sometimes I just dont have the time or motivation.

Efficiency is good in some aspects of life, and not in others. Its more efficient to stay home saturday night instead of going out on the town.

Sways is fine.

got Vote?

Well said.

A wiki would be great, not to kill conversation, but rather to start it at a higher level. The “entry level” fin placement questions could be knocked down with a “typical” setup for various configurations. It would lack the subtlety of a good thread, but give folks a starting point.

How about spackling and fisheyes…

Ha Ha…you mean we have had discussion on this?

This is almost as funny as Paul Cannon’s ‘‘short attention span’’ thread. (I personally think we should keep that one up perpetually just to make a point)

My vote for abused topic would be the ‘‘EPS has more air in it, therefore your board floats more’’ myth. Like the water knows or cares what’s inside the skin…

Inefficiency IS good, in a way, as even the most fundamental basics of any process can evolve, and frequently do, often in small ways that constant discussion may suggest or illuminate. Anyway, if one didn’t like learnin’ and talkin’ and readin’ and suggestin’ on these sorts of things and this process, why would one come to Sway’s? I don’ unnerstand. The thing is the process is the thing is the process.

ditto… I’m entertained by dead horses sometimes. I like that sways caters to experienced pros and novices both, and that it’s entertaining - because we get a view into the lives of other users. If sways becomes too organized it will lose the “down home. I don’t know WTF I’m doing” part that I love so much.

yep, I’ll go with that, ain’t got a f*'ing clue but havin fun and ya know what, each board gets better…

as for long threads…

FREE ROY!!

ROFL!!

It really depends on your goal. If your goal is to get up in the morning and go surfing then going out on the town is not efficient. If your goal is to get laid then going out on the town is more efficient.

Likewise, if your goal is to help people learn about surfboard design, and minimize the duplication of topics, then better organization of the forum would be good. If your goal is to pontificate and make it more difficult to learn then the forum organization should stay the same.

And this was pontificated very well.

Give me dimensions. Man that is annoying.
