My daughter is taking surf lessons and she is interested in getting a board that is good for a beginner. She is a 120lb., 15 year old, who is also a very athletic girl. She wants a board that is fairly “neutral” in shape with no trick rails or tail. What outline and length would you honored contributors recommend ?
A lightweight foam ‘malibu’ will get her the most waves with the least work which is good because immediate success breeds enthusiasm. Mals were initially designed for women. Roy
check out the August Girls 8’0" from Robert August. there’s also a 9’0" version if she wants something bigger.
…a female board , is better to have got less tail area than male board. this is a real problem that no one pay atention…
I have sold many boards to females. I have found for someone your daughters size, something like a fat little pot belly nugget, an egg, or a small double ender. I would not recomend anything over 6’8’’ for you daughter. It will be harder to carry in the wind, harder to get around, and harder for her to turn. I think girls pick it up quicker than guys and she is light. don’t itimidate her with a large board. Find someone that can hand shape her a nice one. If you must buy a popout The Mactavish double ender 6’6’’ or the Mccoy nugget 6’6’'.Go handshaped and get her name on it. That will get more of an interest.
Take care and good luck.
I think softboards(spongy) are best to learn on for at least a month…saves getting banged up by a fibreglass board…I agree with solo go smaller and thicker…I know she wants thin but she is not a surfboard designer she is a beginner she will need as much thickness and width that can go into a small board 6’4" -8" if she surfs consistently or bigger 7’ 6" if its 1 time a month
Beginning girls around my way are having luck with the 7’6" NSP Funboards.
They are pretty durable fand inexpensive first boards.
my scrawny daughters like a fun gun the best for inside soup and rebreak. 8’, glassed light, 20" or 21" wide so they can carry it, rounded pin tail. Sure they ding it, but we fix it together and then they don’t ding it so much. They also enjoyed a bic 7-6 more than other longboards or a shorter heavier egg.
i think a smaller board with more volume and a smooth rocker will do the trick. an easy to paddle board.
she might have troubles when the board´s to heavy.

A 7’5" Pipeline Softboards or Shredders will fit for sure your needs. The cost is good and better when she became intermediate, the same board will be the best due the rails.
