Best Fin for 10' Pintail

I have a board for surfing in comps when it is shoulder high and above. It is 10’ x 22.5 x 17.25 x 13.25. [I weigh 200lbs] It came with a 9" Greenough stage 3 type fin with removable 3" sidebiters. It goes okay but sort of feels like it’s stuck in 2nd gear through sections I expect it to fly through. Removing the sidebiters makes no appreciable difference in this regard. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might be able to get the board to surf faster by changing the fins?

Fins have everything to do with setting up the trim of the board. The 3"/7" set up wont be as effective for nose riding off course. There are many options out there as we all know. The template and foils of you center fin has an effect on speed and maneuverablity of course. Some boards are faster than others down the line regardless of how they’re finned there’s now doubt about that. If you want to chat fins you’re welcome to email

i’d try a 9.5 to 10 inch fin moved all the way back in the box. find a real meaty fin with a thick base that stays wide throughout. the donald takayama DT Retro Pivot is a what i use, that would be a good choice. something like that or Da Cat fin too, or… i know rainbow and harbor make a big fin like that as well… i’d try any one of those

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might be able to get > the board to surf faster by changing the fins? my first question is what are your rocker dimensions?could be too much rocker thereby not allowing you to hit 3rd and 4th gear.second, move the fin up and back-see what happens. sometimes a 1/16 of an inch can make all the diiference in the world.third, sounds like too much fin area creating drag-if possible try to align the trailing edge of all three fins together.enjoy the experimentation and good surfing to you!

…Proper foil = FAST!!! …I’d put in a 10" x 5" base with a smooth sweep…

I use a 7" cutaway about halfway in the box…this setup will really fly…when it gets bigger I move it back about an inch…
