Best Fin for Con Ugly

Hey all.

I just recently aquired a Con Ugly shaped/signed by Bruce Grant. It’s a rider, not a hanger. Rewally in good condition. It’s got a Fin box and pretty light glass and no number so I don’t know how vintage it is. Fin box leads me to think a later reproduction of the shape by Bruce Grant – but no number# so who knows?

Anyways, to my question: what fin do guys you recomend for noseriding on this board. Digging the 20" nose on this baby?

Magic Man may have some special insight here. Checking the archives, I see he shaped Ugly’s for Con too.

Thanks for the help.

My friend glassed this 10.5 fin in an Ugly over the summer:

The previous owner had something much smaller in it for years. The change to the new fin was very positive, major major improvement…

yeah, i’m kinda partial to pivot-style noseriding fins myself…the heritage, as is island fin design’s “IFN”. if you’d prefer something with a broader base, check out the Wingnut “Anchor” fin from rainbow fin co.

Hey Nomadsurfer, I had a Con Ugly around 1968/1969. I got it at the PB Surf shop in San

Diego. Surfed on it at Sunset Cliffs and North and South OB. It was 9’ 5" with a blue t-band stringer with a red tail block. The fin was like a large hatchet. It was a great board, wish I still had it. Sold it to buy blanks and fiberglass to make my own short boards. Good luck with your Ugly and fin selection.

the best skeg i ever had was a 10" Takayama Noserider.

not to get too off track here but if you look at the kite surfing part they look like side bonzer fins.

Grant made a handful in the 90s, My favorite long board.

The fin that came with it was over 11" deep and the base comes close to filling the whole box. A big fin. No brand or name on the fin.

I could go get the measurement off it tomorrow If you are interested.
