best way to get a block of EPS??

what’s the best way to go about getting a big block of EPS?

i’m looking to get a block at least 10’ long, 3 lbs. / cu. ft.

i went to the desk at my local home depot, and the guy had absolutely no idea how to go about putting in the order.

i looked around the Insulfoam website in an attempt to find a product ID# of sorts (thinking that might make things a little easier), and came up empty.

so…to those who have been through this before…can ya get me on track??

I literally smacked myself upside the head once I found my nearest foam supplier.

After a couple weeks of floundering around online and asking on the forums, I took a deep breath and did the unthinkable…

I opened the yellowpages to F, for Foam.

Then I smacked myself upside the head for not thinking of it sooner.

Someone who supplies architectual foams would be your best bet. With all the building and rebuilding going on in florida, you should find someone who can help you pretty close, I would imagine.

Have you checked lowes?

I was just on there website and found some! This is of course where I live though. Here is the link http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=15357-10477-15357&lpage=none

Brand and size…

Insulfoam

2" x 4’ x 8’ R-Tech Expanded Polystyrene R-7.8

I’m sure you can somehow put some of those together to get the size you want!

email these guys and ask them who covers south florida.

in some cities there may be multiple EPS manufacturing plants

There used to be a place around your area called Dyplast. Look in the yellow pages under “insulation.”

I grabbed one of the insulation panels from the rack at Home Depot, took it to the contractor’s special order desk and asked if they could “Call the place that distributes this. See if they can send big blocks of it.”

They’ll need the block dimensions and density but they should be able to pull it off.

Cellofoam in Orlando had some 3# left last time I was there. I am not sure if they still do, they told me they usually do limited runs of 3#. But all in all they were good to work with, good price and friendly people. Once they found out my enormous block of foam was for surfboards it turned out to be quite festive…they thought it was great! So if you feel like making your way to Orlando…but as Schwuz says, the Yellow Pages should give you some more local options…

What are you guys paying for 3#? And does size factor in or is it straight volume.

How about 2#?

Insulfoam in Fla.

Good luck on getting one small block of 3#. We have to buy a semi full in order to get 3# billets made. Next time we order we could get one for you.

For anybody following this thread who might like to see the inner workings of an EPS plant… Warning - the soundtrack reminds me of something that might play as Hoss Cartwright rides up to the Ponderosa Ranch in a scene from Bonanza - crank it up!

soulstice,

The blocks start out 49"x 17’. We usually get 49"x 7’ up to 49"x 17’.

Tell me the size you will need and I can tell you how much.

a block 10’ long should suffice

soulstice,

So 49" wide or 24" wide.
