Best way to remove wax?

Aloha, I apologize if this question has been posted already. I have some pressure dings on the deck of my board that need patching and I’d like to know the best way to really clean off all the wax. I’ve seen products like the “Pickle wax remover” and liquid wax removers, but I don’t know how effective they are. What methods do you guys use to get the board really clean? I’ve heard that a scrap piece of foam from a blank can be rubbed on the board to get wax off. If I don’t have any scrap pieces around, can I buy a piece of foam from the hardware store? If so, what type?

If so, what type? Here is a trick my wife hates. You get the good metal spatula and scrape off the majority of the wax. Then with a hair dryer or any other method I heat the wax (not too hot on low) then I wipe off the residue with a paper towe. Has always worked for me. Except when my wife sees wax on her spatula

You can use a old credit card(or your wife’s)they work great for removal of the thicker wax.If you can get some foam dust from your shaper,it works great for the fine stuff.LASTY paint thinner works well as a liquid cleaner, but if you have an acrylic wash on your board …well so much for the acrylic wash.,Herb

Since the early seventies, we have laid our board in the sun at the beach until it melts the wax, then toss hot sand on it, shake off excess, bake again, get a hand full of that seagrass/seaweed on the tideline, wipes all wax right off, repeat with hot sand, wah-la looks like new again! Probably should toss the used seaweed in the trash afterwards(don’t wanna upset any post hippy types out there brah!). And no it doesn’t scratch your gloss coat…

I’m a freak about always riding a clean board so I do a lot of wax removal. All the ways mentioned work just fine. I scrape the wax off with a 2 inch wide stiff putty knife then wipe with paint thinner to remove the remaining wax then lastly I wipe the board with a little laquer thinner to remove the oily residue.

Hey Herb! What a bitchen idea!! Wife’s credit card! I would imagine the most important step in the process is rubbing the card firmly against the board so all the numbers are worn off so she can’t use the card again!!

then wipe with paint thinner to remove the > remaining wax then lastly I wipe the board with a little laquer thinner to > remove the oily residue. As long as were getting down to specifics – you can also finish with denatured alcohol. It is a lot less toxic than laquer thinner.

How do you use it to remove wax?

Aloha Herb, I noticed that you mentioned using foam dust. How do you use > it to remove wax?..That’s what’s in those pickles they try to sell you for what…$12.OO? AFTER,you have warmed up the board(in the sun,lo hairdrier,lo heatgun, warm water- NOT HOT!!!) and removed the heavy stuff with your wife’s spatula or her favorite creditcard, bondo blade,etc.etc.,sprinkle a generous amount of foam dust on the surface you are cleaning and rub,the wax will stick to the foam dust and you can just brush it off.You can finish with chief’s or veggie oil, gasoline, paint thinner,water,etc.etc.etc.NO ACETONE!happy cleaning,Herb.p.s. you can make your own pickle…just stick some finer foam dust in a old sock or one of your wife’s nylons? DON’T GET IN TROUBLE!!
