I have just templated my 10’8" Noserider and cut out the outline. I am basing this board off a Hobie that my buddy has. His is 9’6" 19 nose 16.5 tail and 23 wide. My question is if I want to scale this board up to my length of 10’8" do I need extra width?
I have layed the templates out and cut the outline basically going an inch wider in all dimensions. The board looks HUGE!!! Dont get me wrong I love the outline but am wondering if I have gone way to wide. Would it be better to keep the dimensions the same and maybe go a little wider say a half inch or so or stay with the board the way it is. I surf in St Augustine FL and our waves pretty much suck most of the time. I know that the board will work the way that it is I guess I am just freaking a little seeing it on the shaping stands and it looking so big.
Anyone got numbers on a good noserider in the length that I am shaping that you would mind sharing with me?
Adequate outline curve will help your turns. As an example, Munoz, Bruce Jones, and others make longboards that have widths 24"+. Most people can't get their arms around them but they ride good and are very stable. If you can take the fins out your buddy's board, lay it on something flat and try to get some idea on rocker. Some of the noseriders I've measured had more tail and less nose rocker than I might have expected.
just went out to the shed and taped a 10'4 velzy that my wife bought years ago while waiting for me to build her a board. it is 24 wide with nose and hips similar to what your dimensions will be. if your board is too narrow for its length, it will be stiff and harder to turn and by the time you get it hauled around, the wave will be gone. so, yes, i think you should, for your 10'8 go 24 wide, with commensurate nose and tail dimensions. for a noserider u would want increased tail rocker and low nose rocker. i would also suggest some nose concave with 50/50 rails in the nose area, going to soft down rails thru the middle and roll the rails up in the tail area starting at where the increased tail rocer begins, to about 70/30. put a nice wide soft rounded squaretail on it and a big pivot fin. i ride mostly in cocoa beach/satellite beach so i am familiar with the wave types that we have on the east coast in the summer...grossly flat for the last several weeks.
Thanks guys. I feel better after hearing that and after looking at the board this morning. peterg you pretty much nailed the way I am shaping this board even down to the 70/30 rails in the tail. I am shaping the blank backwards so I have way more tail rocker than nose rocker.
peterg, you should head up this way we have had fun little thigh high offshore peelers for the last week when it was supposed to have been flat.
I borrowed a 28"+ wide SUP the other day and it wasn’t too uncomfortable to sit on. Might have been the 1" of padding. Either way, it didn’t feel normal, but I didn’t feel like my legs were in pain either. Plus if your wide point is far forward, you probably won’t be sitting anywhere near the 24" mark.
I would definitely suggest a handle on it somewhere. Somebody suggested the idea of a ProBox routed in the deck with no cant insert in it. You could always buy their neutral bouyancy plugs and insert one right before you get in the water so you don’t have to worry about stepping in the hole.
dont know about u, but i usually dont sit at the wide point. usually sit back of that so can pivot board when the 1’ wave comes. board’s probably 21" or less there. 23/24 is a good width for east coast summer waves, which, believe me, the rest of the world would not even paddle out on, or would even call a wave. spent many a 3 or 4 hour day on a BIG board riding well shaped waves under knee high at places like the former O club or 2lite with no one out except 1 or 2 other very sick addicts.
