BIG color decals

Has anyone here ever done a large format color print on rice paper as a decal- the same size as a surfboard? I`m talking about color photographs printed on rice paper BIG enough to cover the entire deck/bottom of the blank and then laminated over? Seems like an idea like that would have great advertising potential, too. What say you?

What would you like to advertise? Advertisements on eggs (egg shells) was recently disallowed. I thought, IMHO, that was a good idea. Auto wraps, however, are hideous. Surfboard somewhere in between. Some are eggs & fragile yet serve as vehicles and create strong personal attachments.

Perhaps an advertisement for rice paper…

Our graphics guy has a proprietary process that lets you wrap an image around complex curves like rails, corners, and bottom contours. I’ve seen it and it looks absolutely crazy. Basically if you can get an image onto the computer monitor, then he can put it onto your board in any scale. It shows a lot of potential…

I’ll see if he will post a picture…

I know its not exactly DIY… but just today i saw an ad. for a company doing exactly that. (Photo quality- full board coverage).

Their website is www.tbd12.com not sure where they are based but the ad. was in Waves Magazine (Australia).

Hope that helps a bit.

(Edit: - On further reading it is an Aussie based company - Gold Coast to be precise.)

Check Feral Dave’s stuff. Fantastic artist with exactly the coverage you are talking adout. I think they use fabric. Diverse surfboards. DV put my check in the mail!!!

Ha! Great site, check it out.

I think they can print any size custom design on ricepaper…

I did 5 boards for Mandalay Bay’s wave pool display. All of them had full length laminates top and bottom, what a bitch! The second resin hit them, they got wrinkles like a prune, my intent was to apply them to the board before laminating, but had to run and grab 4oz. and quickly lay it out on top of the decals before the resin kicked. Live and learn. To you beginers, you might think as pro board builders that we have it all down pat, nothing can be farther from the truth, just when you think you have seen it all, wham, blind sided sucker punch

A few years ago they gave away boards as trophies on the MTV (or VH1) music awards. As I recall the decks were full length rice paper logos. Also I think someone in Florida prints full size floral prints on rice paper.

“they are one piece “cotton” inserts under the glass.”

…as feraldave says.

I’ve been working on & found the right material & process to make full length graphics, that not only able to do anything imagined. But, I have found the material that will WRAP around the rails & tail of the boards.

Everything should be ready to show for ASR in either Sept or Jan in San Diego…

The problems with using cloth is it is really to thick for a shortboard. The difference in mine & some of these other guys 1st is my artwork is way off the top & I can do a complete full longboard if needed. Not limited to 60"… Plus, again my material will wrap a RAIL

BTW- The price for a Laminate is about the same maybe less than what your local shaper would charge for a paint job of lesser quality…

Patents, copyrights & trademarks have all been submitted.

looks like something out of Mad magazine, circa 1966… you’d have to pay ME to ride that board.

Steppin’ on eyeballs, SQUISH, SQUISH, SQUISH…

Not a good board for the paranoid.

Guys it’s not perfect, but if you can print out on rice paper with your color printer you can make some cool designs with this.

It takes a standard photo and blows it up onto seporate sheets. If you can lay it out and keep it together it will look fine. That or just keep the outlines. My roommate did a picture on his wall and it turned out fine.

The only thing is that the over lapping is a deeper color you can tell big time & the inks aren't UV resistant. Will fade pretty quick.

I’ve just sealed the deal & full length graphics avaliable to the public. Either our online selection or any art you have already can be converted & laid out for you.

Have you checked there pricing!!! & its the same material I have been working on…

errrm… the price quoted on the tbd site includes the custom board too jay!

Dont know how practical this would be but take some fibreglass down to your local printers and ask them if they could print straight onto it. i know that they can print onto ripstop polyester. maybe worth a try.
