I had just started shaping a 6'8 thruster and was getting ready to skin the blank, Until i saw a 1" hole that was about an 1" deep. I shaped my board and the holewas still there and still sizable. So i was wondering what i should do about it. I dont want to glass with the hole because i dont want a hole on the bottom of my board. Should i fill it? If so, what should i fill it with?
how about this: get a hole saw with no pilot bit, cut a circular plug from some rail scrap, use the hole saw (or better yet a forstner bit) on the blank, put the plug in the (now neatly matching) hole. Sand flush and proceed as planned.
That’s where the logo goes… You could get an odd-looking insect or a semi-precious stone and cast it in place before glassing. I’ve seen these and other endearing things done to give the board some character. Be bold, see it as an opportunity.
Fold up a $100.00 bill and glass it so the presidents face shows thru. I don’t know which one it is since I never get to see a $100.00 bill. This will also increase the value of the board.
and sorry, artdkt…but ben franklin is on the $100…and he was never president. but if you’re gonna do it, why not go all out…track down a $1000 bill and glass that in there (if you want to really add some value).
Is there any reason not to make a putty of Q-cell and lam resin? Squeegee it level and glass over. This is what I did in a similar situation once. I couldn’t tell where the repair was after it was all done.
If it is a dent you could take a heat gun to it to bring the foam back up. It works. I’ve gotten 1/3 inch dents out. All you do is put the nose of the gun about an inch or two away from the dent and blast it ffor a few seconds on, then a few seconds off and repeat. The foam will yellow, but just sand that away.
But if it’s a hole then you already have several sufficient answeres.
It is easier to feather the spackling than to feather the cabosil/resin mixture. Hard resin/cabosil and soft foam. As opposed to the foam/spackling which are both soft. Have fun…
THis is a variation of Keiths hole saw method but its hard to explain.Take a sharp knife and cut a three sided plug out of the blank(around the ding). The plug that comes out should look like a pyramid (3 sided triangle). Now take a foam scrap and shape a plug to fit only leave it long.Press the plug in and keep trimming the point down until it fits tight. If done right you will have no gaps and the plug will stick up a bit.Lastly mix some lam resin and glue it in only keep the resin just on the end so you have no squeeze out.By doing this you will have nothing but foam and no glue line to mess you up when screening the patch. It sounds hard but it is really easy if you were to see it live.In the end you have no glue line and nothing to discolor like filler patches. Its an old woodworkers trick.I betcha Doc knows this one.
