Big fish dimensions

Hi, I’m planning on making a retro fish, a little longer then the ‘classic’ length. How does these numbers look? 6’8" length, 22" wide at 2" up, 17" nose, 17" tail, 11.7" wide by 6" deep swallowtail, 2.75" thick with 4" of nose rocker and 2" of tail rocker. EPS/Epoxy. I’m a bit conserned about the tail rocker, I tried to continue a curve that had 1.35" at 2’9", like the surfboard anatomy specs, and ended up with 2" at 3’4". But since a friend just got a 6’5"x19.5" with a fuller nose and tail that looks huge I’ve started to wonder about these numbers. Thumbs up or down? regards, Håvard

Move the wide point up a little and reduce the swallow width to about 10 1\2 to 11 max. Pull in the @12" tail dimension according to the way you want the curve in the back half of the board. As you go a little longer don’t forget to put in a little v in here and there. Be sure to get that nice “pinch” in the tail rails. all aloha, tw

Hmmm…I was thinking about building a big fish as well for the summer. Can anyone recommend a blank for a 6’6"+ fish? Does Walker make a blank? Foam-ez’ catalogue says the 7’3" superblue is sweet for old school fishs but I’d like to see if anyone agrees. Good Luck Havard!

The 7’3" is about the only blank that will take a retro fish template for a 6’6". The 6’2"C is a great blank for shorter boards, and is pretty easy to work with. You can retain the natural rocker and come up with a board that will work. You are going to have more work with rocker and foil with the 7’3" blank to net a 6’6".

Try the 6’9" A “superfish” blank from Clark Foam. I got a nice 6’6" 17 x 22 x 16 fish out of one last month.

For the blank selection use the walker 7’4" lower the rocker to 4’’ in the nose and 3" in the tail. These rocker dimensions will produce a 3.5" nose and 2.5" tail these are the rockers that I use on my big fishes they straight fly down the line and they will turn well also very easy to carve. I will be introducing two new fish models this summer. We have also been working on our website check it out note it is far from finished. Good luck. http://www.ancientartsurfboards.com

Yes that is a nice design width, although 22" is a little wide in steep/barrels sometimes it depends on what type of wave you ride …mush, San O ,fast Blacks beach break, Huntington …Take account for paddleing back out after your tired if you want a big fish ask yourself why do i need a big fish …usually it’s cuz theres to many kooks out on longboards that don’t want to share a wave with someone that wants to rip. At 200 lbs. I can still ride a 5.8" Dyno Fish in a crowd of 40 longboard kooks! Ya they get alot of waves I could have gotten if I rode a longer board but with a little savy I end up getting my share wave after wave …and it’s worth it! Freedom expression instead of bullshit looking pretty and walkin the nose! Yes I have a 6.5 fish Wide an heavy and I just had a Rocket Fish shaped with Superchargers… older guys that want to get the THRILL BACK INTO THEIR LIFE go for a bigger fish design at least you won’t be logging it everyday…O.K> I do ride 8.0 8.5 and 10.0 every now an then but when I want to rip I.ve got 5.3"5.8" 5.10" 6.1" 6.2"6.5" 6.7" twin fins, not to mention thursters . It’s so nice to talk to other longboarders that are cool after a session that resect what you’re doing in the water …When they say " you were going so fast out there! Nuuhiwa’s name always comes up…Iam not doing this for myself but for SURFINGS EVOLVEMENT from older guys riding logs everyday! One day I hope to see more guys are longer shortboards somedays there’s money to be made here! It’s funny when a guy says you turn that fish on a dime could I try it …Sorry but it takes a while to get used to it
