hi folks,
im off to morocco for xmas new year again and a friend who is coming along has asked me to make him an 8’0 fish. he normally only rides 9’ plus boards although he did used to have a 7’6 magic carpet which he liked.
ive only made fishes in the 6’ to 6’6 range, what would be the best way to get a template? i will be cutting the template on my cnc router so i could go the boardcad route but looking for a few tips before i start playing with it. he wants lots of float and twin keels.
also ill probably be getting a US blank so if someone could point me to which blank would be best it would be much appreciated.

whatever the make…a low rockered long board blank…works best.
unless you want a hybrid type shape, rather than classic fish shape.
the sluggo model is a good big boy fish template, and can be used for either classic or hybrid.

hey herb thanks for the reply,
the sluggo looks perfect for my mate, absolute
what sort of nose and tail rockers are on that?
i might have to knock up a boardcad model and see what u think
cheers

2-1/2" at the tail tip starting from 18" up.
and 4-1/2" at the nose starting from16".
it was shaped from an 8-8 eaton clark, so the rocker over all is fairly flat.
always interested in, how others re-create my designs.
herb
cool cheers Herb,
ive ordered a 9'5 blank as they had a good deal on it (nearly half price) and that should be with me on tuesday
just struggling to get boardcad to work now!
where in the blank will i lay my template? im guessing nearer the nose to use the rocker thats already in the blank?
also any advice on rails and bottom contours?
i usually shape the rails 50/50 up front going to 60/40 through to a bout 18" from tail then blended into a hard edge past the fins, sound good?
cheers
I’D GO MORE 60/40 IN THE NOSE AND 70/30 MID,GRADUATING INTO A HARD BOXED(BUT BLENDED) TAIL,BUT YOU DIMS WILL WORK JUST FINE.
I PUT THE TEMPLATE 60% NOSE,MAYBE 70.,FROM THE CENTERLINE.
HOPE THIS HELPS.
HERB
brilliant cheers herb, gives me a good starting point,
what about the bottom contours? ive been doing a lot of flat bottoms recently with maybe a hint of v in the tail.
cheers
THAT’S WORKS GREAT WITH THIS DESIGN.
HERB
awesome cheers herb, ill keep u posted with photos as it progresses!
have fun !
you can see where my computer is haunted,…lol.
herb
hey herb, apologies for no photos yet, its been a busy week!
all shaped now, im sorta happy, feels weird doing the tail on a board so big!
i glassed it last night and just need to add fin patch and hotcoat bottom then im ready to fin it
fancy sharing your insight into placements? ive got enough fcs to go quad and first guess would be thats the way to go with it being so big
cheers
