Big Guy 3-4-5, Special Thanks to Mike Daniels

Got some valuable input on this one prior to shaping from M.D. Made this one for a kid weighing around 220 and 6’-2" or so. He’s a deck crusher, so I routed out a 1/4" ditch to lay in some 5/16" divinicell over a layer of kevlar/carbon hybrid cloth. It feels pretty stout, but the kid’s a freakin’ beast, so we’ll see how it holds up. Because of the round pin and the perimeter stringers, the tail was left without tip reinforcement, so I laid up some of the high dense foam as a tail block that’s both strong and waterproof if it does get damaged. Made mainly for bigger days and travel, so I put the quad or thruster option on it.6’6" by 19.75", 14.5"T, 13"N. Widepoint pretty much dead center.

…interesting; very good

did you put resin under the dcell?

-by the way, the kid seems a bit older to be a kid…

At 49, I can call a 25 year old a kid! ha-ha

Yeah, I put two layers of cloth under the foam, and for the tail section, I laid in a layer of 6 oz carbon/kevlar hybrid with 4 oz e cloth over that.

I like the use of materials… how much did it end up weighing?

Nice. DCell should hold up well. Nicely done. Kid at 25 … those were the days. That MD knows some s#&t.

Who is Mike Daniels?

You guys are funny…

surfthis; glad to help. Board came out sweet, hope the ‘‘kid’’ likes it.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Durbs, it weighs right at 8 lbs. That’s 2 lb EPS, RR epoxy, 1/8" poplar bender ply for stringers, double 4 bottom, triple 4 deck plus the divinicell and extra glass underneath it. Much lighter than his previous shortboard (from another shaper) that was also glassed heavy to counter the abuse. We’ll see how this one holds up. I feel like I could have made it much lighter, but like I said, trying to make it last against the abuse.
