Big Guy Tri

Any advice on dims for a Big Guy Tri? The 7’5"A looks like a good choice but I have no idea what kind of tail rocker to use. There is much less tail rocker than the “R” series of blanks. Would 2 5/8" of tail rocker in the “R” be better than the 1 5/8" in the “A” for this type of board? Any advice would be appreciated.

AKA- You might look at using the 7’11R" and use the extra length to “adjust” for a compromise in the rocker you choose. Just slide your template forward or back to dial in the rocker you need. Depending on the type of surf this board will be ridden in you might prefer the extra tail rocker of the “R” series blanks. Good luck. Tom>>> Any advice on dims for a Big Guy Tri? I’m doing a 7’10" out of the 7’11R but i dont like the amount of foam I’m cutting off(outline) but I’ve never had a bad riding board out of the 7’11R, 2 5/8" tail rocker is the key i think.

I don’t know how short or long you want to go, but I just did a board out of the 6’8"H. I was able to net 2 3/4" thickness without too much hassle. I cut it down to 6’6" 5" nose and 2 1/4" tail rocker. I’m 200 lbs and it floats me and is working well for me.

I actually added a little rocker in the last 8" through the tail. You could use the natural rocker of this blank and not go wrong. Also, 2.75" thick is with a 1/8" concave through the middle. You could net a thicker board if desired.

1 5/8th" is way too low(tail rocker) for a std. big guy tri. how big of a board do you want to make?

actually the 7’3"P is my favorite blank…

1 5/8th" is way too low(tail rocker) for a std. big guy tri. how big > of a board do you want to make? Around 7’6", I’ve been comparing shortboard specs and wondering if they carried over to Big Guy Tri’s as they are blown and stretched shortboards. I weigh in around 205 lbs and want to carry around 3" of thickness. Any specs to share? Thanks to all for the replies.

AKA - What are you riding now and what do you like/dislike about it? Also, what kind of waves are you hoping to ride? If you are pretty happy with your present board, subtle changes in the wide point position or tail rocker may improve things considerably. I would say the 7’11"R would be an easy blank to shape. It’s close to 3" thick and has a nice natural rocker. You might ask Noodle specifically about rocker - I think he has a formula that figures tail rocker as a ratio to length. He also has been very helpful to a number of folks in providing template designs based on rough numbers you provide.

the 7’11"R is a good blank, with 2 5/8th" tail rocker. that should be ballpark for your tail, maybe add a little kick off the back, like an 1/8th to 1/4. if you want a gunnier board look at the 7’7"R blank. for a 7’6" big guy i’d start with an outline something like this, nose 11 7/8" - 12 1/2", center 19 3/4" - 20 1/2", tail 14 1/2" - 15". wide point a couple inches behind center. i’d try out a couple different lines and see what you like. don’t make the rails too boxy on that thick of a board. just my opinion…
