Big Sur Board Swap???

Had the pleasure of meeting up with Keith Melville and his clan today for breakfast.

We had a great time with you all!

Keith mentioned an idea for the next Big Sur Campout.

Basically, if someone wants to participate, they make a board to trade.

Keith suggested that we could each start with the same blank and just see what each of us come up with.

I’m thinking if you build a board, your name could go in the raffle and you can draw for which board you bring home.

Whaddaya think?

Starting with a blank that offers a lot of shape variations would be good…

I’m also thinking that we should build for at least a 200 lb rider…

that might be a little big for some folks and small for some but, would probably be good enough for most…

ideas, thoughts???

I’d be sooo… up for that!  Maybe I can take home a cork deck?  A Simmons?  A fun board?  A twinzer?  Definitely something new.

Maybe with a little modification to the game?

Shaper picks the blank, so they can dial in the rocker  etc…  Let us know first if you plan on entering and what your weight is.  So if only the 200 pound club plays, no micro boards.

Also add in the "Pass the Parcel " method.

  • All the boards are laid out.
  • Names picked at random.
  • First name picked gets to choose any board they want.
  • Second name picked gets to choose any unchosen board, or the second name can "steel" the first board picked.
  • Third name picked can choose an unchosen, or can "steel" any earlier chosen board.
  • A board can only be "stolen" two times.  Third guy to own it, keeps it.
  • You can't keep the board you brought.

This way, we can add some more variety to the boards.  A bigger surfer can choose a bigger board, and some 150 pound fly-weight can join in too.

Someone is going to go home with something vac bagged nylon   =)

I am In!

Sounds like our White Elephant Christmass Mark. We could do it Secret Santa style too. Draw a name and make a board for that person with min volume put down by each person.

I like the idea of every one starting with the same blank just to see how many takes on the same starting point we get. You can order the blanks with custom rocker-widths ect. For the guys who make most of their own blanks tweaking is no problem.

Yea,

Everybody who wants to play, post name, and minimum volume.  Kieth takes the names, and randomly assigns a shaper to each name.  Shapers are notified by P.M. to keep the surprise.

I could do something with that blank!

heck yah! I like the secret santa idea.

I think we need to agree on the “rules” including setting a date for entry into the “White Elephant Board Exchange”.

This is a stoker!

Hopefully this will get more folks to come to Big Sur too.

This is so exciting, I’m nerding out!

Can we get a sticky thread and post a deadline entry date.

Ian, where can we pick up that blank? I need to get another PU blank for a friend too.

So do we know what size surfer we are shaping for, but not who? Kieth assigns it randomly?  That way there will at least one board sized for each surfer.

At Big Sur,  they get given out secret santa method, so the shaper doesn’t really know who they were shaping for, and trading will smooth out everything in the end?

I am so into this idea!

could you bring an old “dunger” and see if someone want to swap it?

I would like to be counted in on this exchange.  I’ll do my best, but I definitely won’t be able to put up anything as nice as all you guys.

I’d like to be in too.  Not too many fricken rules and restrictions, tho. You get something you don’t like, a micro chip, that’s the way it goes.  Make a trade later.  Wheel and deal, etc. By volume are you refering to beer consumption? That 7-3A would make a nice Sand Dollar Solution…Mike

Hey Chris I have some ideas about the blank, let’s talk first. You can get US Blanks at Pearson Arrow in SC or Order from Sunset Shapers in SF.

I am up for any rules-Blanks-sizing-beers or not, but I am not getting much work done on any projects lately. Been working on my photography instead.

overhead GLASS!!!

don’t be too hard on yourself Swied, I would be STOKED on that blue single that you brought up

I’m with Rooster, not too many rules.

I also think it would be good to know the dims of the guy/girl who you are building for.

sounds like fun

cool idea im in

I’m in, Rooster is going to love the 8 finned bat winged super dregger I’m designing.  It will have a retractable leash reel, and a built in underwater gopro mount!

I’m in…I can work with the 7’3" A…but I’d like to start with a slightly longer blank. We also need to be flexable so people can use other foam companies and EPS or XPS foam…

Ray

As long as it has a beer holder. Mike

I’m not into rules but…Every board has to have a beer holder should be one of the rules…

.Lets not make rules…just guide lines …so with nose rocker you might have to tilt the beer holder forward…hmmmmm…

I’m thinking that an FCS plug on the deck would be a good support for a custom beer holder with a gimble mount – like they use on boats for the stove.  That would reduce the sloshing and limit spillage.

Shit… I’m brilliant.  Why hasn’t this product been mainstreamed already?
