Big Wave Fin

I recently ordered a new longboard for bigger surf and just realized I need to get a fin. The board is a 9’0" single fin speed shape. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

How wide board? Tail?

How big surf you gonna surf.

Most any 9.25" tail fin works on singles.

I ride a low area 8" fin in 9’0" longboards. loose w/drive. I never liked the bigger fins except in very small surf. Try the Wayne Rich line at True Ames, the fins in the middle

Not saying it’s good for everyone, but my boards that use 8" fins (single) need tail widths around 10-11.5 max, for bigger surf.

My small wave singles usually had 12-14" tails, and an 8" fin was workable, up to head high surf. Bigger surf, more fin needed for positive bottom turns and riding high.

Not for everyone, just me.

I want to say my two or three boards that are in the 9’0" range have 13" tails. .

Thought this thread was for a semi gun longboard used in big surf.

My Mavericks gun has smaller fins than a 6 ft thruster. They are the same depth, but shorter in chord length.

I think you just like bigger fins than most people…

Funny, I took it the other way. The poster is from New Jersey so I was thinking in scale for there. Ocean Beach San Francisco is another thing altogether. I just know what I ride and tried to add an alterative opinion to a 9.5” fin. Big for me is 6’ to 8’. Sorry to have stopped your flow, Bro.

Without knowing the specks along with rocker, bottom and rail configuration of the board there’s no way of knowing exactly how much fin the board will need. Generaly 8.5" of fin will serve a 9.0’ boards if it has a nice rake in the leading edge with sufficient surface and tip area to give the board the drive it needs in bigger surf. If it’s more vertical 9.0 to 9.5" may be needed.

I have a 9’5" with a 14.25" rounded pin tail that works fine in big waves when I slide the 8.5" fin back in the box. It’s attached.

If you can’t see the board it’s all conjecture.

Mahalo, Rich

Nice looking setup. Smooth.

Well, my first post was the question…how wide tail and WP

True dat, Blakstah, my OB guns used only 8" single fins, but the tails were also only 10" wide, or narrower.

I was considering the original idea of “bigger” surf…in my imagination surf around 4-8’, not Mav sizing, OB sizing, or Pipe sizing. And used with a traditional longboard with pulled in tail for point fast waves.

a 9’ greenough stage 4 works great-problem is where to get one.try at liddlesurfboards.com or have halcyon make you one…
