hey, everyone else is making a fish, why shouldn’t i. So this should cover my story. What i am making will be a 6’6 fish. So it is a little bigger than most but not too big. Hopefully this thread will carry me through until it is done.
Questions?
Blank will be a clark 6’9A. The standard rocker on this blank is 5 3/8. I see that most fishes are running nose rocker in the 3’s. If you take the time to pull up the pdf i notice quite a bit of flip in the nose in last part. Would it be advisable to order a blank with a little less rocker? Or since i need three inches off just take it off the nose?
If ordered with less rocker then when tracing template onto blank and say you need to come down 3 inches off the blank would you center it so you take 1.5 inches off both nose and tail?
Aloha , I just made a Fish from one of those 6’ 9" A blanks and I don’t think that cutting off 3in. from the nose will change the rocker much. It is flipped up but for a foot or so. I figud that with it being such a long Fish the excess nose rocker might help. Anyways that is how they designed the blank and it’s supposto be for a fish … So…?? Mahalo to All Don J.
I’ve made two 6 6 fishes with that blank. One for me. One for a friend. I moved the template back a bit to reduce the nose rocker. Board worked good, too. Don’t know about my friend’s fish. He has a hard time getting off his longboard. I don’t measure rocker. If it looks good it should ride good. Well, sometimes. Take a look at the 7’3" Becker. Good fish blank with very little rocker.Mike
Hey Duck, I have done a 6’4" and a 6’6" out of the 6’9" and it worked out fine. I did cut from the back of the blank to loose some of the extra nose rocker. If I had them to do over, I would use the newer 6’8"P Pavel blank. Just used it for a 6’0" and really dig the rocker and foil for old style fish. Have fun and keep us posted. Cheers, Scott.
the 6’8P? I have not seen or heard of that one yet. Does anyone have more information on this blank or a specs page. Sounds like that might be the way to go.
The 6’8P is on the Clark Foam website, and it looks like the obvious blank for larger flounders. You could also read the Pavel interview on allaboutsurf.com, where he talk a bit about the blank.
Good luck bro. Don’t go too wide if you go that long.
Terrific. I found it. I am still curious about rocker adjustments on the board though. Let me explain. I want the main objective of this board is to be fast. It will not be surfed top to bottom or even be doing any cutbacks that put the board on rail. So that being said wouldnt less that 4 inches of nose rocker be more suited to this type of surfing. In the interview pavel mentions the blank with a Lis rocker. Now would i be able to order that at say Mitches or would they tell me to make my own adjustments. Thanks for anyone input.
Rooster- What were the other dimmensions on the 6’6 ers you made. Mine sounds more like the one for your freind? Thanks
Both the 6 6 's were 16.5x22x16. Thickness was 2x3x2 or so. Eleven inches between the tips. 7 inch butt crack. 9x5 single foiled plywood keels. Leading edge no farther than 15 inches from the tips(I’ll measure it if you want). Rear edge an 1 1/4 inches from rail. 1/8 inch toe-in and about 2-3 degrees cant. I made mine big because I was transitioning off of a big full railed 7’4" down the liner and to compensate for my age and lack of ability. Could say the same about my friend. I’ve made and ridden smaller fish, but like them longer than what is popular. 6’2" to 6’4" suits me fine where I normally surf. Fast hollow beach break knee high to a couple of feet overhead. Mike
I glassed my last fish with volan glass because I’ve never used it before. 7.5oz. I was looking forward to the light green tint I’ve heard about. No tint. I thought it was my red-green color blindness so asked my wife and kids. No green tint. Even though I had 12 ozs of glass on the deck it was denting unacceptably. So I put a patch on the deck. Next time I’ll use 6 oz. E and tint it green. Save money. Mike
I got my 5’8 Mandala glassed with volan…I like the added weight (which actually seems minimal) and the board is completely pressure ding free. It has been surfed constantly since last March. Of course, choice of blank helps, as well…
