Bill Thrailkill shaped Hansen 50/50

9’9" 24" wide.

Considering the age of the board (1965/66), it is in remarkable condition.    How did you come to aquire it?   Garage sale? Under a house?  In the rafters?    Is there a story behind it?

hi bill- the board was in a garage in northern nevada. it hasn't been in the water since the late 70s. my son bought it from the original owner, a very cool older gent who surfed mailbu in the 50s and 60s and had been stationed with don hansen at fort ord. we had a nice visit with the seller and a lovely late summer drive through northern california and nevada to pick it up. it is so clean. we have all the garage dings fixed and my son will ride it when he returns from college for thanksgiving. totally cool

Screw your son mate, get on it yourself before he returns from college. Just to make sure its watertight hehe

Looks like it never got much use. The lam hasn’t faded and those red inks don’t last. Is the bottom as clean as the top?

Funny, I was just looking at an old Hansen 50/50 ad today. From the Summer of '66. Check out the glass job specs and what they say about length.

pray for sand!!!

hey motif- missed you at secrets tonight, i saw your girl get a couple good ones. lots of big rocks on the inside! the sand bar is pretty good further out tho’.

the hansen is 24" wide and 29 lbs. i ride different  sorts of things these days. i look forward to riding it some time but i’ll let the boy ride it first. give respect to get respect.

yes, the bottom is as clean as the top with the doyle pivot fin. the board is just amazing. i had one once (9’2") with a faded lam. the red doesn’t last long at all.

Nice job Bill, great to see samples of your earlier works!

Hope your feeling better…

A friend of mine has a 50/50 that’s in similar condition. The red in the lam is faded slightly, but otherwise it’s nearly pristine. here’s a pic of the tail and serial #.

Bill T, which shaper used a “C” on the boards they shaped?

Sammy,

The letter  C  indicates that it was shaped by Bill (Willy) Clark.    A highly skilled craftsman, and boat builder.   He has

''Clark Custom Boats'' in San Diego.   The example  above dates from 1965.

Thanks for the info Bill- I am glad you are feeling better. Steiny

hey thats my board! sheesh blowin’ up my shpot dad! yeeee cant wait to ride it over thanksgiving!

damn kids!

I had one pass through my shop a few years back. It had the double balsa stringer set up. Same outline. Clear. Really nice. But it didn’t have a 50/50 logo, just a regular Hansen logo. Can’t remember if it had the 50/50 pivot fin or not. Pretty sure it did.

I remember the first Hansen I ever saw. About 1963. A guy just showed up with it at our beach one day. It had a dark blue tape off. Rails and vertical stripes down either side of the stringer. Wood laminated tailblock. I though it was one of the most beautiful boards I’d ever seen.

Of course we were mostly riding homemade boards at the time.

he reports it rode well. there are no lefts in santa cruz

now that he has ridden it- its my turn!

That is one beautiful board.  Been looking for one of those for a while now.  You scored Steiny!

I thought they called that fin the "747", "707", whatever the jet airliner of the day was.  I had one in as good a shape but had to do a divorce sale to Frank at Pancho's in Pismo.  Also lost in that sale was a 2nd generation Greg Noll "Da Cat", An old Greg Noll that been restored, a couple of pristine popouts and a three-stringer Pismo Beach Surf Shop shaped by original owner from the 60's Ralph Miller(the guy to first come out with a model called the "Performer"). All I've got left is a Hansen Pintail lightweight from the late 60's, another Hansen that's some kind of noserider(slipchecked) and a "Bud Cravens" stepdeck.  Raised a few heads on a vacation surfing the Cravens at Tourmaline in SD a few years back.  I give myself a good solid B+.  Lowel

Forgot to mention though that I did pull a template off of the 50-50 and have duplicated it a few times.

how about sharing that template ??

id love to make one
