bio-foam tips/suggestions

hey ya’ll, im pretty new to swaylocks, still a newbie… anyway, i’ve been shaping for about a year and have made about 15 boards- all pu/pe. i am interested in shaping a board with the new “bio-foam” from homeblown and was hoping that some people could offer some tips about them. i heard that they are similar to eps in the way that they shape (constant density ect.) and was wondering if they had to be glassed with epoxy or if you can still go with polyester. any other suggestions or tips anyone may have concerning the shaping or glassing of the bio-foam would be greatly appreciated. thanks for any tips and all the insperation.

I have had better luck with epoxy. 2 x 4 deck with a 4 oz bottom.

Keep it light.

I have been shaping and glassing the biofoam for about 6 months now. The foam is very uniform and can be kind of soft when the outer skin is first cut. I plain at maximum rpms and push very slow to prevent rips.I prefer to use the block sander a lot more over the sure-form once the shape is close. The sure-form can rip if your not careful. Once the foam sits overnight it will harden again. When you look at the consitancy of the foam from your cut out you will be amazed. Homeblown said there were some crystallization issues with some air brush colors so I have sprayed on top of the laminating coat for airbrush. But now I am resin swirling and painting with resin directly on the foam before glassing! It’s really fun and looks awesome. I’ll post some pics soon.

hey thanks for the tips. hollowreef have you been glassing the boards with poly or have they all been epoxy? i’ve never done an epoxy job so i am a little reluctant to try. but hey, if you guys have been getting better results from epoxy than i guess there is a first time for everything.

I’ve been using all poly so far with no issues.
