Maybe this is uncool mentioning it here, but I would like some feedback on what some of you think about Al Merrick’s re-issue of that old Tom Curren board “Black Beauty”. Sweet looking pintail. Am I just selling out or maybe I’m just a sucker for nostalgia? Remember how T.C. made that board flow? Yeah, I know, that was Curren, but to see that board being re-released–I’m tempted. Al’s got it listed as “retro,” meaning wider, thicker and with a little less rocker, but I’m 30 and weigh 170-175lbs. Been riding logs and mid-lengths for a while now. I like the flow. 8) It’s listed under “specialty boards” on his website: cisurfboards.com stock dimensions: 7’0"x20 3/4"x3" 6’9"x20 1/4"x2 7/8" 6’6"x19 1/4"x2 3/4" What do you guys think? I mean, I’ve always dug Curren’s style(who doesn’t?), but this would be my shortest board in a long, long time and I’m on the fence. Thanks for your input.
If you want it, get it. IF you don’t want it, don’t get it. Very simple. If ou haven’t shortboarded in a long time, why not start? The Curren board also only come with RedX fins. So those fins wont break unlike fcs.
Sweet board. I guess it depends on how much you ride the logs vs. mid lengths. If you longboard a lot, the difference in length and float might set you way back on the shortboard learning curve. For your weight and board history you should probably go with the 6’9" to the 7’. If you ride smaller eggs and fun shapes, and are a good paddler then go with the 6’6". If you get it, tell us how it rides. I’d love to get one, but can’t swing the flow.
you could take those dimensions to lots of local shapers and they could custom shape one for you. i’ve owned merricks before and they are no doubt great boards, but don’t get too sucked into hype. the black beauty board looks like a pretty common outline with just some extra width and thickness. not sure where you’re at but there’s probably some good local shapers who will spend some time with you and make the right board for you. i’m sure you won’t go too wrong with a merrick but that first ding is soooo painful when you’ve just payed 500+ $.
