black colour on surfboard

folks

A guy I know wants a board made with the deck entirely black… He also wants to put a small cloth inlay on the deck with a picture on it…

He has the inlay and tells me it’s made from 100% cotton.

Anyway I have some concerns…

If I go ahead with this i’ll glass the deck with 1 layer of 6oz with a black tint. All laps etc with be ground off etc and then i’ll lay up another layer of 4 oz with the cloth inlay underneath and laminate in clear resin.

1 - will image be visible over the black glass underneath.

2 - considering that Ireland is normally cloudy is there a major risk of delamination with this black resin.

Any advice would be welcomed

Brian

  1. Doubtful. the problem is is that once resin is satureated into the cloth inlay it will turn it tranparent thus allowing whatever’s underneat it to show through. If it were wight it would be no problem, however the black will show through and more or less darken the entire image to the point of being non-readable. However you can paint the bottom of the inly an opaque white and that should allow it to be visible. However were you ahve painted opaque white, you will see just that. White. So unless the design is inside of a box you will have the white showing onlong the outside of the inlay. Not to pretty.

  2. A black board is fine as long as you NEVER leave it in direct sunlight. I would think Irealand would be about the best place on earth for a black surfboard. But then again i cwould tell your friend to NEVEr leave it exposed even on a cloudy day.

paint the foam black and use clear resin

can we see the inlay first?

Brian,

Why don’t you glass the bottom then tape of the deck where your cloth is going to be. Then glass the two black inlays and use a razor to cut around your tape where you will be glassing your cloth. Next tape off the edges of the black and lay down your cloth. After it dries cut the edge along the black with a razor. Then do a final wrap layer to pull it all together. They will leave your cloth design with a nice white base and you still have your black board. We do this quite often.

We also do a lot of black and really dark boards. Just keep it in a reflective bag and you will have no problem.

Sincerely,

Troy

We taped off the grey outline first and laminated the grey first then cut it out with a razor and then glassed in the checker cloth. We cut in 6 oz glass into the clear sections so it was all one level and did a final 6 oz wrap.

I forgot to tell you that like a black paint job on a car, it shows ALL imperfections!!! so beware
