Blank choice for groveler

My sons asked me to shape them a version of a Dumpster Diver.  They want a 5’8"x20"x2.5" board for summer beach breaks.  I’ve been looking at blanks and have seen several that might work.  These are the ones I’m thinking about. All US Blanks (that what seem to be most available by my house).  6-0R, 6-3EA, 6-4EA, 5-10RP, 6-6EA. I’m leaning towards the 6-0R.  Does anyone have any experience with something close?  Any suggestions? Thanks

Maybe just too scary to answer

Or something.

You mention nothing about experience.

So…

I’ll bite.

My honorable 2 cents

Stay away from the “EA”

Too much rocker and CNC stuff

Not for mortals

The “RP” nice fish blank

Go with the “R”

And note the 6-2 A

is worth looking into.

Heres my equiv to mini Sim using the 6-2 A.

Aloha

I vote for the 5-10 RP for the board you’re talking about.  The standard rocker will work and there’s no need to do a lot of heavy foiling.   The real CI model has their proprietary rocker so I wouldn’t expect this board to turn out exactly the same but I imagine it will surf just fine.

I use the 6’0P for the type of board the OP described.  Just make sure you get a clean blank because you will need every bit of it to get the 20" width.  I use the 5’9P for tiny grom dumpster devers in the 5’2 to 5’4 range.

Thanks for the advice.

Mattwho, as far as experience not sure if you’re asking about my shaping experience or my sons surfing experience.  They have way more surfing experience than I have shaping.  They are twin 14 year olds that surf pretty well.  I was actually complimented that they asked me to shape them a board.  Probably so they can ride it at a beach break without worrying about dinging their shortboards.  This will be the 5th board I’ve shaped, but should be fun and give me some more experience.

Thanks again.

Just your board building

No doubt the Grom’s rip!

Listen.

I’m a Dad ( and Grampa)

My “Boy” is my #1 test rider.

Again, more advise.

And #1!

Having your boys want you to do this.

Should wake you up as to a greater understanding of

what makes things work.

#2. Honor this with research and careful investigation.

#3 Although the “Boys” probably will not tell the truth

But they will surf YOUR boards as best they can.

#4 Last but by no means last.

Carefully watch (the boards) as they surf.

Oh, and work hard Pop! keep 'em on the team.

My best to you and your family and eh

Have fun and take time to enjoy!

Anything 6’ and under that is wide enough and maintainss thickness at the rail.  Something close to the desired rocker.  Some of the best blanks made for this type of board are currently be made by Millenium.

The 5’10rp carries more volume out to the rails then the 6’0r.
