What type of paint should I use to paint my blank? What should I do to stop it “desolving” into the resin? Where do I put the Pin Line, on the blank or on the sanding coat? The last time I tried “car paints” the resin turned red, any ideas why this might have been? THANKS GUYS James
Water based acrlyic. Availabe at surfboard materail supply stores and your local art supply store. The paint should not dissolve with resin contact. Applying the paint correctly is the trick. Too light and it was fade out. To heavy and it will crystalize making good adhesive contact with the resin and blank less possible. Too heavy is ugly! You only add enough water to the paint to make it airbush able. I am talking very little water. The paint must be fully dry before applying glass and resin. Pin Lines are applied on the sanding coat to cover up glass cutting marks. If it is a good glassing job you will need no Pin Line.>>> What type of paint should I use to paint my blank? The last time I tried “car > paints” the resin turned red, any ideas why this might have been? > THANKS GUYS James Use a good quality water base acrylic paint. Some guys use tempra paint but I prefer acrylic.I know one painter who adds some tempra to the acrylic paint because he says it makes the paint dry quicker. I like to spray the first 2 layers thin and then heavier coats after that. Make sure your paint is totally dry between coats,if not the moisture left in the paint will cause crystalization when you laminate ( heat from kicking resin draws the moisture to the surface of the paint). I sometimes spray as many as 5 lite coats to avoid crystalization, red and black are the worst colors for this problem. To heavy a paint job will cause the color to lift and contaminate the resin(this might have been your problem). If the board is a sanded finish I will paint the pin line on the foam, if it’s a gloss finish then put the pin line on the sanded surface before you gloss. Hope this helps
