:o)
Thank you guys, this really makes me happy! hope my little experience helps someone like me at the very first try, i should have changed the subject of the thread in “poor man’s board” but i’m still on time
McDing thanks for the suggestion, but have a question for you: if i use resin and flour the mix comes out a bit too hard isn’t it? (if i use epoxy)
In your opinion is better your way than use a bit of PU poured into the damage, than wait for it to foam up and cut away the exceses? (seems so easy and fast…but never tryed)
Or what about using Vinyl-glue and flour? (like i used to do with wood)
Cheers Flavio… workin on tail and leash plug
Flavio-------------If you have access to Q-cell, micro baloons or some other filler that is normally used for ding repair: use that. Flour as a thickner is an emergency solution, meant to be used when you can’t get your hands on anything better. Tape off the area your are going to fill with two inch masking tape or tape and paper. Put the tape as close to the gouge as you can. This will prevent your mixture from spreading. Mix your patching material thick, thick enough that it won’t run. Spread it into the gouge with a squeege. Squeege off the excess. When the patch gels to the consistency of cheese; gently cut the excess off with a razor so that you repair is flush to the foam. Always do repairs to shaping gouges after you have done your finish sanding. If you wait until just before you are ready to glass there won’t be any need for further sanding. You can also use common light-weight spackle to fill gouges. Same process no resin involved. Paint it with Kelley-Moore, Sherwin williams house paint or any good latex acrylic. No one will ever notice. If it’s on the deck, that’s even better. Wax will cover it up. McDing
McDing think i’ll take a try with microballons, unfortunately it’s in a place where i would have leaved it clear, no color, so i thought to use poured PU… uhmm…i’ve to think to a different graphic now but it’s ok, thank you very very much!
Q-Cell… don’t even know where to find it here, i’ll take a look.
I’ve completed 80% the rails (50/50), see attachments…
I’ll finish the shaping job and then start to consider ding repairs.
Cheers Flavio.
Flav---- As I stated previously ; I am blown away by the progress you have made on a first board. Especially when I consider that you put the blank together from scratch, have limited tools and materials. Keep up the good work. You obviously have a good eye for shaping. McDing PS where do you surf over there?
McDing thank you, but what i’m doing it’s ALL Swaylockers’ merit, hope to keep on progressing… shaping the nose by now (attachment 1)
Haven’t enough time these days to work on the board, but guess what i’ve just begun last night (in really early stage of develope)
Cheers Flavio
wow thats so cool. I was thinking that green foam stuff would work,b ut I don’t know where to get big chunks like that. Where did you get yours? I want to try that…
good job…i dont have time to read much , but the pics look good…keep it up.
Flav
I like your style of taking pictures! Do you do photography on the side also, cause it looks like you do.
Where did you get your foam? Do I just go to a hardware store and ask for PU foam?
Your board looks great.
I am inspired. I think I will start shaping my first board in the coming week and keeping an ongoing thread like flav. I think I am going to use polystrene sheets from home depot and epoxy. Does anyone have any tips on selecting the eps sheets. What density, thickness, length? I plan on making an 7’6 egg shape.
Here i am, have worked on the board just 45minutes in one week, that’s noooo good, hope to finish it for Christmas (really cooold weather now)
In any case, i’ve found out the best way to repair the damages (see attachments) i’ve done is to use PU dust mixed with Express Vinyl (fast curing vinyl) you can choose to have a more liquid or more solid mix to squeegee in, after 24 hour at good temp. it becomes really hard but quite the same colour of PU and is really cheap.
To answer:
Deathfrog: i got it from a boat builder i’ve recently found near me, he is also e PU distributor so i could choose dimensions freely and he can cut it to my specs, it’s a bit expensive, for one block big enough for one board i spent 30euro. but i couldn’t find XPS long enough so i had no choice.
ModestMouse: i’m not a photographer, but i do love takin’ pictures… particularly skate pics
RickDog81: Go for it, my next try will be Polystyrene too (as soon as i find it) there are looots and lots of good info’s here on swaylocks for EPS/XPS, for what i’ve seen 30Kg/m3 (guess it’s #2) is a good choice, extruded is better, width i just don’t know, here in europe commercial measures are 30mm and 60mm so you’ve to glue at least two sheets.
Next time i’ll remove tape and post the finished shape (hope to finish it)
Cheers Flavio
Here i am again, last post in this thread cause i finally did it, the shape is done, not too satisfacted but i’m so excited, next try will be better…or at least i hope so
Thank you all guys…
