I just finished my second board & it came out sooo much better than my first effort. I painted on the PU foam with Design Master acrylic spray that was recommended by Greg Loehr and it came out beautiful, until I glassed it. I used Apex epoxy resin and the bottom and laps over the color showed no discoloration, but when I lammed the top, the yellow turned green and mixed with the orange and took on a tye-dyed look. I searched the archives and was pretty sure acrylic and epoxy didn’t have compatability issues. I went ahead and hot coated and sanded, then re-taped everything off and repainted with a darker color, then a coat of PE gloss and it came out pretty sweet. Just wondering if I should have clear coated over the paint first. Here’s some pics of the board, which I love the way it rides, so stoked to surf something I made start to finish, with help from all the knowledge the Swaylocians share here.
Nice board and graphics.
CREATE X Matte top coat will prevent this from happening. I use it when building layer of colors and don’t want bleeding or mixing. It is an airbrush painting material. You don’t need much and it is not expensive and you could spray it with a airbrush pen.
Good save on the fix.
Greg Loehr sells Resin Research not Apex. Wonder what Apex has to say?
"I searched the archives and was pretty sure acrylic and epoxy didn't have compatability issues."
...Until you try to gloss with epoxy resin over acrylic pin lines....but that's not what you did....
I've sprayed raw foam with yellow and orange several times and had no wierd stuff happen....but I'm using Resin Research. Did you do light coats and let the paint dry real good in between coats? Did you measure real good when you mixed the resin. I don't want to have my yellow paint turn green so let me know if you find any answers...Ray
Thanks for the replies & thanks Huck for making the pics appear, I see you do that for a lot of posts, so how do you do it? I can’t figure it out. Ray, I did light coats and let it dry for 2 days and I did measure very carefully, it’s a simple 2 to 1 mix. So I will try the Create X mat top coat that bb30 recommended and see how that goes. I did use the same paint with the first board I made and had no problems, but I used PE resin on that board. I’ve got a 3rd board shaped, an 8’0" mini-mal for my daughter, but I’m going to let Resinworks glass that one. I can live with the imperfections in my lamming techniques on my own board, but I want hers to look nicer than I’m able to provide yet. Resinworks said any waterbased paint will work (with PE resin) so I ordered some of the Krylon H20 latex spray in rattle cans, so if anybody knows if there is a problem with this paint and PE resin, please let me know, the paint will be here on Friday & I want to deliver the board to the glasser next Monday.
Your user profile has no location. If you are talking Resinworks in Escondido/San Marcos they do great work and get it done on time. I want to know why the Apex Resin made your colors turn green.......or why your paint reacts with Apex.
I have nothing against Apex. One of my trusted suppliers sells the product.
I have a simple system based on Swaylock's information and RR resin. I glass my own...poly and epoxy.....
Ray, yes it’s Resinworks in Escondido & I bought the Apex from Fiberglass Supply in Oceanside. I’ll try to get some info from Apex, I’d really like to know why it happened too. The reason I got the Apex is that its way cheaper than RR resin, $86 for 1.5 gallons. I’m just up the 15 from you, I put in my location in my profile, but it doesn’t show up in my posts. I’d love to hear about your system, your boards always look awesome…Kyle
