Hi all, Recently I got few high density foam sheet (light blue in color) from a local supplier, there they sell eps/styrofoam etc. As I know the blue foam used for insulation is something similar to the eps/styrofoam. But this stuff is another story, its much much stiffner than Clark foam and EPS. Unfortunately, the shop guy didnt know what it is~~~~~~~~~~~… Another shortcoming is they only have 2’x4’x1-1.5" sheet. I m planning to make a 5’6" fish by gluing these sheets together, set the rocker by bending it on a rocker table. Do your guys have any experience in dealing with this case? Thanks for any inputs. Regards, CrabieHK
Hey Crabie. I’ve just finished shaping my first board from blue foam, here in Sweden It’s possible to get bigger square blanks 245x60x15 cm in size. They are used for insulating roofs and basements up here. The foam I’ve used sells under the name of “Roofmate” and is manufactured by Dow (big chemical company). To put the rocker in You can hotwire the blanks like You do with EPS. The board i shaped was a 5’10" fish, and to be able to put the whole rocker line into one blank (no glueing of blanks) i bent it weights whilst in the sun covered with black plastic bags. I’ve heard You can also bend Your blanks in a sauna! Watch out for twists and warps in the blank if You bend it with heat. You must laminate with Epoxy since styrene will melt the foam. The material in these blanks is the same as in eps but extruded instead of expanded as in Eps. The cells in the foam are fused together chemically with a very homogenic structure. This means the blanks will be virtually nonabsorbent of water, very handy when You ding Your board! Well good luck, feel free to email if You have more questions. Hi Erik, I do have a hotwire cut. For this foam, I just cut the shape smoothy with a jigsaw… I think the one I m using is not a kind of styrofoam. Both styrofoam and eps only be cut smoothy with a hotwire. I shaped my blank this afternoon, the bead is much much dense than styro/eps. Its similar to those PU foam but not resistance to styrene. I tested it with a small piece, the styrene melt the foam. Regards, CrabieHK>>> Hey Crabie.
