I am an intermediate surfer and currently ride a 9’6" rounded pin, with a 2+1 setup, that I usually keep as a single fin. The board has a bit of a concave in the nose and is pretty thick. I am finally getting it dialed. It handles well in hollower surf, but I don’t like to bring it out in bigger stuff because of its size. Its big and heavy, and things get ugly when I take a bad wipeout. I have been considering two types. The first being the Wayne Lynch Evolution Fun Shape I think. I like the ride of the rounded pin and would like to keep it. Plus I can ride it as a single fin if I choose, because it has a 2+1 setup. Has anyone ridden one of these, and if so, how do they ride? http://www.evolutionsurf.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ESS&Product_Code=EF7%2710&Category_Code=EFS I have also been considering a retro egg, or just an egg. The whole single fin thing appeals to me, if you can’t tell. But I am not sure how they ride. I searched the site and haven’t really found anything. I am starting to figure out that they are probably better for smaller waves. I am basically looking for a board that I would feel more comfortable with in bigger more hollow stuff. I get nervous with my 9’6", its just too big. I know this question is all over the place…sorry. By the way I am a “big guy” so thats why I am looking at thicker boards.
Where are you located? I ask because the Bob Wise shop in San Francisco has a couple of these for either $499 or $549. I think there might be an 8’1" and a 7’6" (or 7’10", can’t remember). If you’re a big guy the 8’1" might be a better option. I’ll check it out for you if you want.
Thanks but I’m on the East Coast. Besides I can’t afford to buy right now, just researching. Really want to find a good fit.>>> Where are you located? I wouldn’t advise any drastic scale downs , maybe go w/ a shorter, more forgiving shape for the larger surf(what part of the east coast?) say keep the same width and thickness and increase the nose and tail rocker , trim in the tail just a tad and make the nose more of a up rail w/rocker to avoid nose dives add some center to tail “v” hard rails in the tail and your in there say 8-8’6" six to seven inch center w/side bites better than a high dollar name (they make great boards) find a local or reginal shaper that can dial you in -work w/ a individual rather than a corporation -might not be the in-thing at your local beach but the board might end up being better for you!
Thanks for the idea. Yeah I have been considering a shaper, as it would probably be cheaper in the long run. I’ll ask around.
