To all working Surfboard Shapers. If a person has obvious above average surfing skills how does that relate to aquireing a ‘better’ than retail board deal from a board manufacturer? In other words how do you want/like to be approached(pictures, resume, contests, trophys, referrals?) and what do you expect in return for your minimum/full board sponsorship? Basically, what is the most professional non-humiliating way to ask for a board deal without NSSA background?

WhenI was an apprentice at Challenger Surfboards, Tinker, the owner said that some of the best surfers were some of the worst salesmen. He said he would put a total kook on the team if he could sell boards. So, your ability to promote your prospective sponsor is your greates “selling” point. That potential sponsor will want a return on his investment.JP
