hey everyone, i’d really appreciate some input on this one. i ordered a custom board about 3 weeks ago (9’4, 19nose, 23 mid, 16tail, 3thick) and asked for the board to be HEAVY (25-30 pound range). i asked it to be glassed in 7.5oz volan all around and to be made with supergreen foam. so… im wondering… what do you guys think a board like this should end up weighing? i got a call from the shaper today, he said its gonna be about 4 more days to get it glossed and polished… the bad news was that the board only weighed 19 pounds. i just cant figure out how it could be so light. so i set out to figure out how this could be. i have the same blank he used at home and the same type/amount of cloth and resin needed to make it (a future project of mine). i weighed all the materials and subtracted what i thought would be shaped off, cut off, sanded off etc, and then some… and i still got 27 pounds. so basically, my question is… what do you think the weight on a board like i ordered should be… and how could it end up being 19 pounds. thanks in advance everyone i really appreciate it -steve
19 lbs sounds right. I built a 10’ 6" board out of green foam and 6oz glass and it only came out at about 23lbs. Bruce Jones had some similar on his website that came out at 25 lbs. If you really wanted to boost the weight I would have tried going with classic foam and a big fabric inlay or extra fiberglass. Moving up to 7.5 ounce glass does add some weight but not much, for more weight you need more layers of glass and since a long board heel dents easier more glass on the deck might not be a bad idea. At any rate 19 lbs is about right. Good luck, Matthew Weaver>>> hey everyone, i’d really appreciate some input on this one. i ordered a > custom board about 3 weeks ago (9’4, 19nose, 23 mid, 16tail, 3thick) and > asked for the board to be HEAVY (25-30 pound range). i asked it to be > glassed in 7.5oz volan all around and to be made with supergreen foam. > so… im wondering… what do you guys think a board like this should end up > weighing? i got a call from the shaper today, he said its gonna be about 4 > more days to get it glossed and polished… the bad news was that the > board only weighed 19 pounds. i just cant figure out how it could be so > light. so i set out to figure out how this could be. i have the same blank > he used at home and the same type/amount of cloth and resin needed to make > it (a future project of mine). i weighed all the materials and subtracted > what i thought would be shaped off, cut off, sanded off etc, and then > some… and i still got 27 pounds. so basically, my question is… what do > you think the weight on a board like i ordered should be… and how could > it end up being 19 pounds. thanks in advance everyone i really appreciate > it -steve
a 10’6 that weighed 23 pounds? that seems strange because i have a 9’0 on green foam that is glassed with 6 bottom, 6+4 on top, and it weighs 21 pounds. …also… the 9’4 i have coming has a 1/2 inch cedar stringer… that might add a little more weight?

A simpler explaination: someone didn`t build according to your original specs.
i was in the shaping room the whole time he made it, made sure every single detail was exact… so i really dont know. another thing… that 9’0 i have that weighs 21 pounds is also smaller in every way possible as well as being glassed much lighter

I wonder what the final shaped core weight was, prior to glassing…
insert theme to the twighlight zone here you need more and heavier glass
Hey Tim, I’ve used some of the specs of the Fryed Fish you shared with me way back on a post we shared on B.Jones site. I’m missing one number. Would you be so gracious as to measure the trailing edge of the twin fins to the tip of the tails. I’ve been using 8.25"- 9.00" on most of my boards depending on the length and templates. Just curious as to what Skip Frye’s take on this was with your 5’10". Thanks! Tom Sterne>>> insert theme to the twighlight zone here>>> you need more and heavier glass

I have one I just finished shaping, glassing and hotcoating. Ready to set the fin plugs. This is the first one that I tried to model after the dimensions (template) you provided. I’ve shaped several others that were quite a bit wider in the nose and tail (18" rather than 17") and I’ve been really pleased with them. For my own boards I’m using the 6’2"C blank and coming up with 6’0" shapes. Will let you know how this latest one works. Thank you! he used the right blank, it’s the 10’1. (overall length 10’3" 5/8) green foam with the half inch cedar stringer… i watched him pull the blank off the rack and i checked it out. like i said, i have the same blank at home… it weighs 16 pounds as is. so i figured the final shape was around 12

I would have guessed that a double 7.5 oz. top and bottom would bring the weight closer to 30 lb.
a 10’6 that weighed 23 pounds? Sanded only, no gloss.(although I’m not sure gloss would add that much weight) that seems strange because i have a 9’0 on > green foam that is glassed with 6 bottom, 6+4 on top, and it weighs 21 > pounds. …also… the 9’4 i have coming has a 1/2 inch cedar > stringer… that might add a little more weight? I got my hands on a 9’6" custom that I did earlier this year for a fellow up here. It is a 9’6" X 23.25" X 3.25" with a 19" nose and 15.5" tail. It has a 3/4" balsa stringer with 1/8" cedar on each side(t-band), the blank is classic foam, a nose inlay, koa and basswood tail block, and was glassed in 7.2 ounce silane one layer on the bottom two on the deck, glossed and polished. With a 9.5 inch fin in the center box (no side boxes) it weighs 23.5 lbs. As for the Cedar, Western red cedar is a relatively light weight wood. I don’t think a 1/2 inch chunk of it is going to add that much weight and may even be lighter than basswood. I had a guy come talk to me once that wanted a koa stringer- that would have added some weight! Anyway, good luck with your board. Matthew Weaver http://www.siempresurf.com
