Although I have respect for Sunny’s surfing ability, in no way could I ever condone his thug antics out in the water. There is too much of that bullshit going on in the water. Who is he to send someone in. It seems like the guy who dropped in on him was sorry and apologized. Where’s the ALOHA man? He needs a lot of growing up to do. Standing up for what u believe in is great, violence and terroristic threatening sucks. I dont think he gives surfing a good image at all. I guess it makes for good viewing maybe.
Foamdust, Yeah i don’t exactly condone it either(although it’s nothing new, just less out in the open these days), it’s just unusually to see a high profile person smack-a-kook, cause in Cali. there would probably be a lawsuit. I also understand they put differing personalities in that house to start some sh@t and even the girls are tripping already. You obviously are flowing well on the Island with it’s crowds and congestion and stress, how do you manage to get your waves and get out still stoked!!! You must be avoiding high profile spots or local regulated reefs with huge pecking orders! There’s been fighting lately here at Wind’n’Sea/Big Rock and seems like a lot of mouthing off whenever it get’s overhead, not good but there are drop-ins everywhere and that is not cool…I avoid the havoc and troll the peaks for my scraps usually avoiding idiot spots like Swamii’s, Wind,n,Sea, Big Rock, Newbreak, South Mission Jetty, where idiots lives are centered around their little peak and fellow idiots. Grew up in Aiea but now living in So. Cal. and there’s plenty of waves if you avoid the surf schools and hit hard. Laters…
I was surprised that it portrayed the people in the house for what and who they really are and didn’t try and embellish or sensationalize. Having lived on the North shore and been involved in exactly that situation I was somewhat impressed by the honesty of the production. I don’t think the American audience is going to appreciate this. Not juicy enough. I’m afraid Sunny’s gonna hafta carry the whole thing by beefin’.
Sunny is an idiot. I can picture it now…He’ll die an old crabby man with no one around to love or care for him…and he’ll wish he was never acted like the thug surfer that he is…albeit an amazing thug surfer.
Yeah that’s why i like it, the groms too, cause it’s REAL, must be a surfer/producer or director(very savvy/smart) actually the Survivor guy is involved i guess. I know surfing and this is right on the money personality wise. Greg, you and Jeff Crawford, Rassmussen(r.i.p), and all the 70’s East Coast guys could probably tell some North Shore tales too,eh? Remember when Crawford got drilled with a dog food can to the face(late seventies)? There’s a Sunny clone at every major good spot in CALI, just like a pit bull man, anger management brah, can’t blame him/can’t condone him. You got to be one big dumb haole to drop in on the Hui guys, definately not my idea of fun going out at V-land super crowded and getting my vehicle jacked up while being insulted in the water. Don’t need it, got 6-8ft hollow barrels just last Sunday without even a mean look. I’ll definately be watching next week, hopefully kooks will get a clue from seeing the repercussions of their bad manners out in the lineup…Even Nat Young got a taste. Sh@t happens!
I think its rather pitiful that there are places on this planet that one will feel intimidated to surf because of an individual or groups claim on that particular spot. NO ONE should feel threatened to participate in his/her passion for fear of threat, verbal or physical. Surfing is such a beautiful sport/art/past time and to have this dark shadow cast on it is a disgrace. I can’t think of any other sport that has such a stigma attached to it. I never heard of someone saying that we shouldnt golf,play baseball,play tennis, etc. there because we might get beat up. I think mutual respect between locals and visitors of any area will go a long way. I don’t think this problem will go away in my lifetime, but I can dream can’t I?
I don’t consider Sunny Garcia a professional surfer, not with his maggot attitude. He’s still a young guy and has a lot of years left to surf. I’m sure someday he will hook up with the wrong kook and get himslef severely injured…just like Nat did. Nat learned from that day, and I respect Nat for that. It’s really sad to see a guy like Sunny who is one of the premiere surfers in the world, who has surfed the biggest and best waves on earth on a regular basis, and he still can’t control himself. He must really hate himself and his life. Curren and Slater are the consumate gentlemen and never beat up someone. I guess they are comfortable with you they are. It all comes back to haunt people…it’s hard to get away with being an asshole these days.
Sunny’s not that young for a professional surfer. Wonder if his knee injury that’s been plaguing him and could end his professional career is maybe a little karma coming back to bite his arse…can you imagine him not surfing? He’d probably hang at the Volcom house and heckle everyone before picking his prey to pummel when they come in. Get a life and enjoy it.
I agree with all … sunny can be a bitch and sunny can be nice but mostly hes a bitch . I grew up the same side that he did and i cant remember anybody being that way or is it i cant remember . Theres a whole lot of places where we can surf in hawaii with out all the hassles ......... i guess attitude has alot to do with it . Derek right on bud , Surfhungry you were raised in aiea ......... its where i live now what era 70s , 80s ? I lived both in aiea and maili growing up . I miss the country man . I surfed out a Rocky Point a few years ago when Sunny was out and saw him rag on some poor guy for not paddling fast enough on the way out to get out of Sunny’s way on a wave. The situation wasn’t even a close-call. It just showed me that this guy is just a nutcase to be avoided. From the show last night, looks like he hasn’t changed. He needs some serious help. P.S- His knee will end his career. It’s been a problem for too long to not have serious damage.
Don’t worry fella’s Sunny will soon be retiring (probably next 3-5 years) so he won’t be traveling anywhere outside of the Rock. But don’t you all agree that it is about time that someone in the entertainment industry used ACTUAL surfers to portray SURFERS, fact of the matter is that Sunny is just a face on the over-angered Hawaiian scene. More often than not the Hawaiian surf crew are more than happy to bitch slap all the donkeys in the water or on the beach it goes back for generations, only real problem is that the family and friends of those who don’t or can’t back up their attitude feel the need to “handle” it for them. Remember NOT ALL hawaiians are the same however it is unfortunate that Sunny being a “westsider” never could learn the ALOHA that the Queen of the westside RELL always portrayed. But in the surf scene there isn’t much aloha left…
Sunny just reminds me of many Hawaiians I met over there. Seems they have three Hawaiians, on the show, all representing different groups. There are the enforcer Hawaiians, like Sunny and Johnny Boy. Then there’s Myles Padaka who’s your typical laid back Hawaiian. Then there’s that other kid who represents the hoale kid who grew up in the islands. He would be a modern day Rory Russell. As far as Sunny goes, I think he deserves respect and expects it. If he doesn’t get it he makes a demand for that respect. That’s the Hawaiian way. I would have a problem with it if I didn’t know that when the Hawaiian guys, like him, come here they are very respectful of us. Any of those guys who came to the Inlet were unreal and treated us as the locals. When I was in Hawaii and Ben or Eddie would drop in on me, I’d usually straighten out or kick out. And it was never because I was afraid of any of them. It was because it’s their place and they have rights over mine. Like I said before when they came here they treated me with the same kind of respect. Too many haoles think the Hawaiians are unfair, but their not. They just see things through their perspective and with their cultural background. And it doesn’t have anything to do with haoles stealing their land or haoles being in Hawaii. It’s a cultural thing. Almost tribal. It has to do with respect and the importance respect has in their culture. As Sunny himself said, “it’s the way I was raised.”
Well put !! I know when I met Dane K. in the '80s here in CA he was very friendly and respectful. When I met him again in Hawaii, I was shocked that he remembered that I met him when he was here. Blew my mind as he IS a LEGEND! Trouble often is they they expect to be treated with when they travel yet they rarely treat those who are traveling to their home with the same. Personally I have great respect for both, but they remember that is is THEY who give themselves the bad rep.
Aloha spirit is a myth. It isn’t just Sunny, it is a bunch of other idiots. Trust me, they don’t pull that crap in Brazil. We, make them pay severely. Sunny is a tough guy and he does pick his pray. But I can guarantee I have someone smaller who can beat the crap out of him. If anyone knows Sunny, let him know. Let’s see if he can meet the challenge on the mat.
