I am currently planning to make a two piece sub 5’ (hybrid hollow wooden + foam) board for travelling.
Off course, the more compact I can make the surfboard, the better. I am particulary interested in wide tail twinfins.
This (mandala) board caught my attention, since it is about 4’6" and seems to have a good outline. It is said to be a concept board:
Anyone made boards this small, how do they surf? I come from longboarding, so looking for something with reasonable float. My last board was a 5’1" which I have no problems riding in our (weak) northsea surf (0.5-1m hightide waves with about 6-7 sec interval). It’s short, but still packs about 38 liters.
I would like to make the board about 4’6" as well, with a parallel outline and wide noise and tail to compensate the lenght. Don’t know about the rocker, I tend to do very little noserocker (only 2") but don’t know if that’s good or bad on an ultra short board.
Thanks for the input, will post progress on the board if anyone is interested.
If I was going to make a sub 5’ for travelling i’d pull the tail in to cover a broader range. Those super wide tails can be abit of a hassle if the surf gets larger. Ive made a normal simmons and then my own version and i feel the narrower tails go so much better.
hamrock: much better than the squared version not so slidey. Not a huge fan of those stumpy half moon keels. The round tail is pretty smooth + holds in quite nicely. The best setup I found was a 6 inch cutaway single with side bites.
I’ve made two really short boards, one is 4’4 and the other 3’10. I am 68kg and can stand on both. I made the 3’10 off a boogie board template for when I had my knee operation. It’s a Twinnie and is really really fast. Forget about turning though!
The 4’4 was a squash tail but I found it too hard to set on rail and seemed to want to skip out. I put the biggest fins in I could and ended up ripping out a side plug. So I cut the tail down to a pin- very bodgie but it works up to shoulder high. If I made another I would cut the curve down a bit. It gets up and going well but feels like only one speed. Good for mush.
How wide is that? It looks really wide, but that might just be cause it’s really little. I’m assuming it’s gotta be pretty wide to gain some surface area though. Also what’s the rocker like?
I want to make like a 4’10" or something eventually, but with a less curvy outline.
22.67 inches. I was going to post that picture on the worst ever board thread. Dunno about the rocker, it is pretty flat as I cut it from the back half of a 6’6 blank and cut the nose into the tail of the blank
