Bob Simmons and George Greenough

Previous thread about El Paipo Grande and Bob Simmons has made me go back and read that great old article on him in Surfer`s Journal again. Always wonder what direction he would have gone with his surfboard designs and construction methods if had he lived longer. Heard rumors the family/friends used to have his writings/diagrams on paper, photos and tools. Some have said the spirit of Simmons passed on to a kid named George Greenough. Care to speculate?

True Bob and George arrived at similar conclusions regarding their surfcraft, but independent of each other. As I understand it George didn’t know of or see any of Bob’s creations, yet developed similar craft based on his own experiences and readings regarding hydrodynamics, displacement etc.George comes from a background of sailing and fishing, whereas Bob approached it from a more traditional, mathematical approach, yet both utilized neutral railed displacement hulled surfcraft-very unique and interesting to be sure. About 12-15 years ago one of the surf publications did a “family tree” type diagram of shapers and whom influence who.One branch went something like Bob Simmons-George Greenough-Greg Liddle-and possibly Paul Gross who should have been in there if he wasn’t.

Never saw it, but sure be great to see that shaper “family tree” diagram posted in Swaylocks. Someone could check, have it in their collection of surf publications. Many were working on the Greenough-inspired shorter displacement hulls/high aspect ratio active fins in Australia, years pre-California. Wasnt P.Gross associate editor of Surfer Mag back in 1970s?
